Vin Scully kinda sucks

So I'm watching a bit of the Dodger/Padres game after the Jays telecast was finished, and I realized this guy is a total bore. Kudos for longevity, but there is no excitement in his delivery, he rambles on about irrelevant facts, and just seems like a broadcasting dinosaur. Being alone in the booth made it even worse since there was no one to interact with and so he rambled on incessantly.

The one thing I do give him credit for is that he wasn't messing up calls and names at his advanced age, unlike our pal Bob Cole.

Vin Scully is a legend! I love listening to him but that is just me. I find myself trying to emulate the way he talks during the game. No colour commentator necessary when Vin is broadcasting!

In fact the character Dana Scully was 'named' after Vin Scully because the creator of 'The X Files' was a Dodger fan.

How respected is Vin Scully by other broadcasters?

Joe Buck, lead announcer for Fox (rightsholder for this year's World Series) has offered to step aside so that Vin can call the Series this year.

Joe Buck, the much maligned (though still less maligned than his boothmate, Tim McCarver), announcer who has called every World Series since 1996, has recently come across the petition for Vin Scully to call this year’s World Series. Rather than get defensive, Buck took it all in stride, even supporting the fan’s quest to hear Scully call one more Fall Classic.

From the L.A. Daily News:

“Personally, I’d love it,” Buck said the other day. “We’ve always toyed with the idea of having the hometown guy involved in a World Series broadcast. I’m from that camp. In my dad’s era, we paid a nod of tribute to the greats. And there’s no one like Vin, or close to Vin.

“I’d happily step aside to hear his voice (on the World Series). I would not fight that at all. That’s just how I grew up.

“As far as I’m concerned, he could be part of it every year. I’m not selfish. I realize who the game’s greats are, and I always defer to them - my dad (Jack Buck), Ernie Harwell, Curt Gowdy, Harry Caray. There are only a handful of guys who are as identifiable with their organizations as any player is.”

Whatever your opinion of Buck’s game-calling abilities, this can only improve your opinion of the man. Not only does he have a respect for the greats who came before him, but he’s willing to sacrifice his own screen time in deference to Scully. Unless he realizes what a great PR move that would be, in which case he’s just another Hollywood prima donna who is out for world domination in an ever growing and complicated media market.

Baseball broadcasting, though, is a strange beast that is unlike any other platform I know. There are some announcers who are considered fair announcers by some that are labeled as boring and un-listenable by others. If you are from Chicago or New York, you probably love Hawk Harrelson or John Sterling, while the rest of the world wishes they would shut the hell up. And while I’m not the world’s largest Joe Buck supporter, he has called the most important games of the past 15 years. When we’re all old and gray, there is a good chance our children will speak of Buck’s greatness at the mic because, like it or not, he was there for all the big moments. And when that happens, I hope he’s allowed to call one final World Series, too.

Given the state of the Dodgers, they probably got rid of the rest of TV crew.

To me, Scully was/is more suited for radio. I remember him calling the Saturday games when baseball was more a weekly event.

Hopefully he retires before he dips into the "Lost It" pool that old Cole has drenched himself in...

Vin certainly has his supporters, and I knew that when I started the thread. I'm in my late 20's so I like my broadcasters to have rapport with one another, go apeshit over crazy plays, and be able to tie in pop culture with baseball. That's not Vin.

Vin Scully isn't just the voice of the Dodgers. He is the voice of summer.
If you are of an age where you remember twisting your transistor radio here and there to get the best reception at night so you could pick up distant ball games from Pittsburgh or Detroit or St. Louis you would have an appreciation for an old school guy like Vin. He's in a league with guys like Red Barber, Mel Allen, Jack Brickhouse, Bob Prince, Harry Carey, Jack Buck and so many other great announcers from a bygone era. I get the MLB package on cable, and even though I am not a Dodgers fan, I will turn on their games just for the soothing voice of Scully.

The thing is, every *sportscaster you listen too that is not your own sportscaster will sound wrong, each and every one of them, it takes time to get used to one.
