Video Editing Question

I've been transferring VHS tapes to DVD. One thing that I miss about VHS tapes is the ability to save your spot on the tape, even after you've turned off the VCR. When transferring video from VHS to the hard drive, I end up with a 2 hour long MPG which then gets burned to DVD. With DVD, if I turn off the DVD player and/or remove the DVD, then re-insert to play it again, I have to fast forward through all the previously viewed material to get to my last spot.

Is there any way (or some software) available to automatically divide up this big MPG into a bunch of smaller MPGs (chapters)? If it would burn everything to the DVD next, that would be a nice bonus. None of the software that came with my video capture device or DVD burner will do this. If there is software that is available to do this, any recommendations? Or is there a DVD player that will save your spot, even after you've turned it off or pulled the DVD out? Thanks for any help.

Well, on my Mac, the DVD player software has an option where it will automatically restart from the last place you left off on a dvd. And the free iMovie software does let you put in chapters.
I too love the Mac, and prefer it to the PC for movie editing and such! iMovie is slick, and I used it to produce some fancy videos of my last trip to Italy.

Now, for the PC side of things, there is software that will convert your MPEG2 to a working DVD with chapters. Look for software bundled with ADS technologies Capture Cards. I think it's DVD Express.

Back to the Mac, I find that the DVD burning is a lot better than on the PC, and I don't even have to worry about Book type and all that!

YOu can make chapters with Nero, Sony Vegas Video or Pinnacle. Why pay for the software? it can be downloaded with serialz, free of charge on P2P.

Many DVD players will start playback from last scene, even some of the real cheapies will, theres a site that shows all the specs for DVD players, I'll see if I can dig it up

Thanks

Thanks guys, I think I figured it out. I use InterVideo WinDVD Creator. It DOES do what I was looking for; the feature was just buried in the GUI in a not too obvious place. My bad for not reading the manual carefully. Still, some good suggestions for the future though. I have Nero too; I'll have to check out what freakshow said.

Gentle Ben et al;

http://www.viseohelp.com

Or, if you type in http://www.dvdrhelp.com you will be re-directed.

This site is fantastic. I was debating on buying a liteon DVD recorder at Costco for $149.00 ($30.00 off) but was shown the error of my ways, as I really want a DL recorder, like an LG or Sony or other. So, Costco was helping the distributor to blow out older technology. Ah well.......
