I don't think you can do it more discreetly than by doing it yourself. Just go to your favorite electronics store and by a USB video converter. It will allow you to plug your VCR into the USB device and convert it to AVI or other format. And then you can easily use software to make a DVD.
Or if you have a SO there that you don't want to see the video or that you purchased the equipment, buy the equipment for a buddy as a late Christmas present and ask if you can be the first to use it, right away.
