Looks like Vernon Wells is having a "Joe Carter" type year in 2010 and will probably retire with "Joe Carter" type career stats. Yes? No?

Vernon is a much better fielder and much better base runner. Joe was a better hitter in the clutch (and smiled a lot more).

Vernon will never compare to Joe, Carter was a much better player....and more of a "team" player.

I think if Vernon can stick around till the end of his contract, he will become the Jays all time best hitter and will break most team hitting records.

Definitely better defensively and maybe slightly better runner but I think the B.A., HR's and RBI's will be very similar. However, Joe Carter has 2 World Series rings. I think Joe will fall just short of HOF material.

Not even close.

Joe Carter received 3.6% of the eligible vote, in his only year on the HOF induction ballot.
As a result, he is ineligible to remain on the ballot (under 5 %), and can only be considered by the Veteran's Committee in 20 years.
Good luck with that, Joe.

Isn't Joe's career stats just behind Jim Rice (HOFamer) and not that far behind Andre Dawson (HOFamer)? Maybe my memories of Joe far exceeds the reality.

I've noticed this years that the VW haters that were very vocal last year are really quiet this year. He was a bum, a slacker, and not worth the bucks they're paying him. Shhhhh they're scurrying around here somewhere. I know it.

Yeah. He carried that team which was loaded with slackers like Alomar, Olerud, Molitor, White, Cone, Key, Morris, Winfield etc. Look at all the talent Wells has around him and he still can't win.

And like George said, Carter is and never will be anywhere close to HOF. BTW, I was a big Joe Carter fan.

They are too busy bashing Cito every time the Jays lose. Some people just need to have a whipping boy. It doesn't really matter who, just as long as they have someone to criticise.

Don't forget that VW only batted .260 last year. Currently, his B.A. is all the way up to .273. Of course, his 20 HR's exceeds the puny 15 he hit all last season.

The 'fictitious' Toronto Baseball Hall of Fame has few members. Of those few, Joe 'Walk Off' Carter has Number One status in that Hall.

Game six of the 1993 World Series.

"Here's the pitch on the way, a swing and a belt! Left field! Way back! Blue Jays win it! The Blue Jays are World Series champions as Joe Carter hits a three-run home run in the ninth inning and the Blue Jays have repeated as World Series Champions! Touch 'em all, Joe, you'll never hit a bigger home run in your life!"
—Blue Jays radio announcer Tom Cheek.

Agreed. Not to say Cito isn't perfect and sometimes you wonder why he does certain things. VW is having a very good year.

Whatever might happen over the next few months, those responsible should be congratulated on their fun way of playing with the HRs and solid starter pitching.

My 2 wishes - return to form for Hind & hill, and a stronger bullpen (Tallet and Frasor are not good enough IMHO).

I'm sorry, but Vernon is not having "a very good year" as some of you put it. He is having a better year than he did last year. But for 15 million this year, and more than 20 million next year? He needs to be hitting better than .300 with 30 homers and 100 plus RBI at year's end. Stop making excuses for him.

Advanced statistics show Joe Carter as merely an average hitting corner outfielder. His career OPS+ is 105 (average being 100, and of course traditionally defensive positions will have average less then 100) - the main reason for this is his very low On Base Percentage. The Jays had some good hitters 4-7 behind Carter -- there RBI totals were all negatively affected by having an on base drag like Carter in front of them.

Carter was always overrated because of inflated RBI stats. Three factors:
a) Free swinger - did not take walks in RBI opportunities
b) More importantly then a) he was not such a dangerous hitter that teams pitched around him in such situations.
c) He had great on base guys in front of him.

Certainly an above average performer through the World Series years, but he may have been the player that got the most undeserved credit on those teams.

Ok guys, if you had first draft choice in a pick up baseball game, would you pick VERN or JOE? I think VERN has an edge defensively but JOE would be slightly better offensively.

One things for sure, Wells will never hit a world series winning home run. He'd pop up.
