I'm seriously thinking of moving to Vancouver. It's closer to my homeland, is much greener, and more beautiful. I understand the people are not as uptight as over here, and everyone is more chill.

I woudn't be leaving anything behind. I don't have a good job. I have no SO, no friends. I haven't gotten anything out of this city after 8 long years. The winters are also cold.

For those of you who have lived in both cities, which do you prefer? I'm specifically interested in:

a)cost of living
b)housing
c)crime
d)friendliness of people
e)job opportunities
f)recreation

Which city would be better to raise a family in?

Thanks for your input.

Toronto
I love Vancouver but have never lived there and don't know the details like cost of living/ job opportunities, etc. It depends what you're looking for....a wise man once said
to me, "Vancouver has a beautiful backyard but Toronto's got one hell of a living room!" LOL

If things aren't working out for you a change of scenery might help you restart your life, regardless of which city is better. Even if you decided after a year or two that you liked Toronto better, what would really be your loss?

Personally I prefer Toronto, having lived in both cities. Primarily it's because I dislike how dark it gets in Vancouver during the winter months. It's always overcast or raining, the sun sets early and rises late. You can literally go for months without ever seeing the sun.

Sure, it's warmer, but it's also darker. On the other hand Vancouver summers are amazing, longer days, more sunlight, green growing things everywhere.

Other than that both cities have a lot to offer. Toronto has more cultural events, but Vancouver is a lot closer to a lot of good out-doors type stuff, so it depends on your personality.

But again, I'd say if you find you're stuck in a rut and you feel your life isn't moving, a complete new start might help you get things going, no matter where you move to.

Vancouver is a Great City and becoming better all the time.
Cost of living is high, Real Estate is very Expensive
Crime, I doubt much difference to Toronto, just stay away from those places you shouldn't be in
I have always found people more relaxed and more friendly in Vancouver
Jobs, depends what you do for a living but its a busy economy
Recreation....do you ski? Sail? Bike? Blade? Surf? Sail? its endless

I have lived in Both, if I had a do over.... Vancouver

Enjoy which ever you choose !

Car Insurance is run by the Government of British Columbia, so you should be looking at better rates than rip-off Ontario
Your housing rent will probably be a little more expensive though.

Sounds like you should move to Vancouver.

Obviously, cost of living is higher, slower pace and cloudy gloomy weather.
But you have nothing here, so have an adventure and go for it.
(You can always move back to TO)

Hmmmm What can I say that hasn't already been said? I love both cities, and am glad that I've lived in both.
- For a smaller city, Vancouver has much more waterfront, and it's easier to be out on the water.
- Although you have to put up with a dark, rainy winter, I've found that my skin didn't dry up and get itchy during the winter like it does here.
- IMO it's more of a walking city. Here I drive everywhere, there I'll walk.
- If you're crossing the border, Seattle is a whole lot nicer than Buffalo.

Whatever you choose, I wish you the best.

I prefer Toronto

I've lived in both. I prefer Toronto. The escort scene in Toronto is second to none. The scene here in Vancouver is pathetic by comparison.

Real estate is way more expensive. My little 1,200 square foot townhouse with no air conditioning was $300,000 45 minutes outside of Vancouver in non rush hour.

Car insurance is the same or more. The traffic grid is a nightmare compared to Toronto. You can't get anywhere driving in a straight line.

The summers are nice, and your car will last longer because they pour less salt.

Thanks for your input.

Cost of living: If you exclude the central area of Vancouver, housing costs won't be much different than Toronto. Places like New West, Surrey, Coquitlam, etc are all "reasonable". If you want to live on English Bay, a condo will pop you 500K. Food prices, etc are a bit higher than Toronto.

Crime: The outer ring of suburbs of the Greater Vancouver area are tough (think Surrey, Abbotsford, etc). Urban Vancouver is pretty safe in places like Yaletown or West Van. East Hastings is "skid row" and Toronto has NOTHING to compare. It's just 10 square blocks of destitution.

Friendly People: Vancouver wins hands down. People are more relaxed, healthier and geared to spending time outdoors.

Job Opportunities: Move to Calgary

Recreation: Do you ever need to ask? Vancouver wins hands down.

Transit: Vancouver wins hands down.

I've been to both cities. I can certainly say with experience, that Vancouver rain is the most depressing part that makes me not want to live there.

if you can get a decent job, you'll be happy there.........many people go there and fail to establish themselves ( or wind up on hastings).....but give it a shot.
