I cut the cable cord a long while ago and have been d/ling using megaupload ( way back ) and now icefilms.
I'm not a fan of torrents from kicksss or other torrent sites as I have been sent a few notices along the way for copyright.
I now have the opportunity to get an invte to iptorrents and was wodering if its worth it to d/l from there. How safe is it really?

I have also never used Usenets but i'm hearing great thimgs all the time and the feature that i like it that its a direct download.
Someone recommended Newsastrawed for $96 /year which isn't too bad I don't think.

Sppeds and usage is not an issue as i'm on the 250mb/sec d/l rate and 20MD up paired with unlimted GB usuage.

What is your preference & why? also open to other methods of d/ling that is safe and hassle free.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Torrents, free. You're downloading, sharing, and storing. You can download, turn off sharing and delete once done. But torrents are driven by sharing. Newsgroups are server based. Files are stored on private servers, that's why you pay.

I've gone to torrents since most news services have had the DCMA takedown issues that make things not so available.

A few things to consider if you want to do all of your movies and TV from torrents or newsgroups:

- Use a provider OTHER than the top tier providers. (Bell, Rogers, Telus, Shaw...) They have software to watch for this sort of traffic and freely pass out your info. Since they are selling the very things you're trying to download for free, it's in their best interest you get caught. (Not, it has to be a provider with their own infrastructure if it uses a top tier carrier for the last mile. If they resell the entire package, you get no benefit from this.)

- Use an anonymizing VPN service. Encrypt all of your torrent traffic through an anonymous VPN so that nothing can be seen locally. Even if they suspect you are downloading movies, you can't get the notice if they can't tell exactly what you downloaded.

- Using those two things together, consider a program like Media Center Master. If you like you can put the downloading of movies and TV shows on autopilot. Instead of searching, they just turn up on your network once they are out.

The first two points are important. The third point is more just convenience.

Newsgroups also don't track your IP so you won't get those copyright warnings/threats. Yes, you pay for the newsgroups to keep their servers running but is an option I'm thinking about but so far not so popular as torrents and there is limited content.

I am probably the guy who recommended astraweb but no longer. I switched to newsdemon and am very happy. Still about $100 annually.

I realize that I am in the minority here but for me, things dont have to be free. I am willingly trading the anonymity of usenet despite the lower cost of torrents. I have downloaded several thousand movies, mp3 and audiobooks so there is enough selection for me.

If you want to try usenet for less up front investment, they all sell a block of data like maybe 500g for $20 or so, letting you put you toes in the water.

Lastly, i use free sabnzb for the newreader, am very happy with its ease of use. And nzbindex.nl as the search engine. Binsearch.info is second choice.

Have fun.
