The other day the cloth strap (for lack of a better term) on the back of my tie (the part you tuck the small end of the tie into) became frayed and I had to cut it off.

First off, is there a term for this part of the tie?

Second, do all ties have this piece?

(some mindless questions for Sunday morning amusement... :p )

1. if it is a separate piece from the label, it is called the retainer. If it is just the label it is called either the label or the retainer label.

2. Usually the retainer is found only on better quality ties. Another indication of quality is a wool lining.

It's called the label loop!! You can probably find a tie in a no frill store without this piece.

I can't remember the last time I've worn a tie.

You could always buy those clip-on ties, like Coach in Cheers.

In your case, it is called a pussy slip. :p

For the OP:

get out your needle and thread and sew one on from a tie you don't wear anymore (you know, that one that is 8 miles wide from highschool???)

You are not supposed to use the loop label anyway.

And if he does not have one send him one from your extensive up to date collection:rolleyes: from 1978....
Sorry I just had to...
Hmm I don't have any needles from 1978.....*scratches his head*

I usually pull them out of my sewing kit to remove slivers etc and they never seem to find their way back!!!

BTW: Ms D: why didn't you ever respond to my email?

Many top end ties have the label sewn on all four sides (no loop), expecting the wearer to understand how to use a tie clip or how to wear a tie so that the short end doesn't show.

I don't wear a tie, it gets caught in the drill chuck and hurts like a bastard!! lol

Speaking of ties: anyone else notice that whoever dresses Ron McLean for HNIC really has great taste in ties? Man, he wears some nice ones!!

Me neither, it would get caught in the PTO.

I found it unfair, that I spent 25 years in dark suits and ties,
and a year after I retired from that business, casual became the norm. Rats.
