I have an old iPhone that I believe the original contract is completed.

Can someone explain what/how I would get this phone unlocked. What options do I get by unlocking an iPhone.

I currently have a very basic Rogers plan that cost about $20 a month, it gives me some data and limited minutes.

unlocking an iPhone (different than jailbreaking) will allow you to use it on any carrier, world-wide.
A 'locked' phone is simply locked to a specific cell provider, and will not recognize a SIM card from any other company.

Who was the contract originally from? Depending on the provider, they may offer a way to unlock the phone.

The phone was origannly from Rogers. I understand from my last conversation with them my contract was up about 6 months ago. I haven't been using this phone, but would like to and if I can use in Europe too that would be great.

It would help if you actually said what version of Iphone it was and the current firmware. Since you said it is an older one you can most likely unlock it yourself by downloading a program called redsn0w. It is all automated pretty much and will unlock and also jailbreak your phone if you want which will give you more power to customize it and add apps that aren't available on the app store.

the hobby needs more capitalism
Call your carrier, Telus and Rogers will unlock it if the contract is done. Bell is in the process of finalizing their process AFAIK.
