I didn't work for 3.5 years. Lived off of savings. Wasn't looking for work either. Thinking about applying to jobs soon (I used to be an Engineer -automotive). What should I put on my resume for the 3.5year gap? Furlough? Family leave? Medical leave? Not sure if I'll get an interview but let's see.

Don't make up false employment.

Have a specific reason that has a specific timeline.

Like you always wanted to take time off to go to Europe or to take a one year sabbatical to organize your life, home or learn a new sport, hobby or something positive. Then COVID hit and you were prudent and responsible enough to have saved money to not risk working.

Might be a good idea to look into some courses on some new or current practices in whatever field you have the luxury of choosing to get into. Maybe a refresher or updating on the latest CAD platforms?

Maybe look into investing some time in the Gig-based side of the industry to get some current references of your good work.

I've been unemployed for decades aside from a few short jobs that ended badly. Failure to Launch combined with really crappy situations plus a propensity to stress out too easily and being a weird ass freak.
I don't suppose putting on a resume "Watched movies and TV, fucked around on the internet, read books and jerked off over oneself on the daily" would be a good thing to add to the resume.

La la land
lol!!!

It's fucking unreal how stupid and absurd some of this stuff is.

Anyway, I eventually go in for an interview and don't hear anything back in the next weeks so I move on a get a management position at another big box retailer. About 7 or 8 months go by, I get a card in the mail that says "Lowes" on it. I open the card and it says something like "Dear so and so, we would like to thank you for your interest in Lowes but we've decided to go with a more suitable candidate at this time. Good luck in your future endeavors".

It was like "what the fuck kind of shit show are they running over there???" lol All this over a fucking full time shitty minimum wage retail job. Give your heads a fucking shake man...

I can't even imagine the the headaches and turnover they had at that time. I'm sure they smartened up and figured some shit out but holy fuck man....lol.
I doubt they did. IT is not part of Robert Rules to do that.

Canadian govt writes out generous cheques to people 65 years and older. That may change in the future. But if it doesn't, I realized one need way less money to not work long before 65. Assuming no kids or overspending on SPs. It's doable.

3.5 years isn't that long of a stretch...go out swinging and tell them the truth...you went out for some soul searching using your savings and now you're ready to go back out there and do some damage....well not literally damage but you're ready to make a difference...if your resume is clean, you're golden...I've seen a big sign at GM.ca in the oshawa plant "we're hiring"...have at it.
