I may be attacked savagely for this.. but there is a pretty clear difference between having consensual ("consensual" not meant in the legal sense) sex with a 17 year old and raping a 6 year old child. But under the law, they are both considered the same crime.

I see nothing wrong with the age of consent being lowered to 13. When I was around 13 or 14 I missed out on a great guy that was 24. We really had a connection but he felt uncomfortable because of societal stigma/pressure and broke off our in the closet relationship. When I reached my early 20's we reconnected and had an affair. He got married but swore to me that he would have never got married to vice his current wife if he knew my feelings for him would remain the same years later when we could go public with our love.

depends where you are. some places 16 is the legal age for sex. as long as the person is over legal age to consent to sex there isn't a issue. 13 is far to young to be able to be fully educated and think you are ready to actually have sex. as mature as you want to think you are, you are not. hell i even think 16 is to early.

there is a difference between consensual sex and rape. if you do it to a minor there isn't though, they are both rape.

I was thinking about this thread on my extensive drive home... and have deduced that this is nothing new for lawyers.

In fact- its self preservation. Its THEIR way of thinking... The "laws" don't fit the times so they change the laws to fit their idea of what should or should not be "legal"... under the guise that they are doing other people (aka the general public) a service. Then, they use those laws to garner 1,000's of billable hours upholding/ arguing/ revising said laws.

Its no different than anything else lawyers do.

(Disclaimer: No, I have absolutely no respect for the profession of "barrister"... in case that wasn't clear...)

Personally I think all crimes short of murder should have a set statute of limitations, as otherwise some minor infraction one has completely forgotten about from 20 years ago can wreck one's life. Not that I have anything to fear in that respect, but in a general sense I think it is a good idea. I don't think some retiree should be hauled into court now just because he copped a feel of somebody's tit once in 1968 when he was 30 (not the specifics of Hewson's case exactly).

No - in Canada the age of consent is 16; until a few years ago it was 14.

Actually, this is a good point. It's only recently that we have had an 'ick' factor to child brides.

A curious turn of events, where children are granted ever more rights (similar to adults) except when it comes to them deciding who to have sex with and when.

It's a confusing double standard. And if I think about it, I would suggest very few are ready for the emotional roller-coaster that sexual relations brings..until they are at least 18, perhaps 20.

Does that mean, it makes sense to raise the age of consent?

I can stomach if she said what you pointed out, but she's saying it's okay if a girl is younger than 17.

If he felt he was doing nothing wrong why would he be uncomfortable?
That seems an odd notion on an escorting board. How many ladies are uncomfortable about working as an SP because of the social stigma? How many clients had some doubts about what they were doing after hearing how much this industry "subjugates" women?

It doesn't matter if the age of consent is 13, I'm still gonna put you in a ditch if I find you dating my daughter.

Far better than lowering the age of consent to a ridiculously young age, is to add a "teenagers in love" provision e.g. the age of consent is thirteen, however, between the ages of thirteen and seventeen, you must be within five years of age otherwise it is criminal conduct.

Isn't one of the points of the argument here (Hewson) dealing with older men and teenage girls though? We're really talking about guys over 25 and teenagers 13-17. The law doesn't usually get involved when two 13 year olds are having consensual sex even if one side's parents aren't keen when they find out about it, whether it is technically legal or not. However, if the adult partner is over 25 and the parents are upset about it, well, the old jailbait tag applies. In Canada that age is currently 18 (the 16 age often quoted is not unrestricted - there are numerous important exclusions to it).

All the 'immigrants' in Britain must be following this very closely. Clearly a sign that England is not England anymore. oh.. btw are there any 'age of consents' in the middle east?

Talk to a nurse at the local Children's Hospital / Obstetrics Clinic. They do double takes, but 12 and 13 year olds have everything required to get pregnant and have kids.

It might not be your daughter, but someone's daughter has found a boy, had sex, and got pregnant.

Jordan

The age of consent in Jordan is 18 for sex outside of marriage, although females over 15 can consent to sex if they are married to their partner.[39]

Kuwait

Sexual activity outside marriage is illegal in Kuwait.[40] The marriageable age is 15 for girls and 17 for boys.[40]

Lebanon

The age of consent for sex in Lebanon is 18 for both males and females. If the partners are married to one another they can have sexual relations at 15.

Qatar

Any kind of sexual activity outside marriage is illegal.[citation needed] Like Saudi Arabia, Qatar has no age limit for marriage, but the consent of the parents must be given before marriage.[59

Saudi Arabia

Any kind of sexual activity outside marriage is illegal in Saudi Arabia, but there is no restriction on the age of marriage.[60] For instance, in 2008 a Saudi court refused to annul a marriage between an 8 year old girl and a 58 year old man.[61] A prohibition on marriage under the age of 14 was being considered by the Ministry of Justice in late 2008. According to cleric Ahmad Al-Mu’bi, the appropriate minimum age for sex "varies according to environment and traditions."[60]

Syria

The age of consent in Syria is 15, per Article 491.
Article 491:
1. Every person who has sexual intercourse with a minor under 15 years of age shall be liable to a term of nine years imprisonment at hard labour.
2.The said term shall be not less than 15 years if the child is under 12 years of age.

Turkey

The age of consent in Turkey is 18. According to article 104, if the child is 15, 16 or 17 and the age gap is less than 5 years, the acts may be prosecuted only upon a complaint.

United Arab Emirates

Sexual activity outside marriage is illegal in the UAE

Yemen

Any kind of sexual activity outside marriage is illegal in Yemen. Until recently, Yemeni law set the age of consent at 15. But tribal customs often trump the law. In practice, "Yemeni law allows girls of any age to wed, but it forbids sex with them until the indefinite time they’re 'suitable for sexual intercourse.'"[84] In 1999, the minimum marriage age of fifteen for women, rarely enforced, was abolished; the onset of puberty, interpreted by conservatives to be at the age of nine, was set as a requirement for consummation of marriage.[85]

Iran

In Iran, sex outside marriage, regardless of age, is illegal. The minimum age of marriage in Iran is 18 for men and 16 for women.[32] Ways around these regulations include temporary marriages (Nikah mut‘ah).[33]
[edit]Iraq

The age of consent in Iraq is 18. "Any person who sexually assaults a boy or girl under the age of 18 without the use of force, menaces or deception is punishable by detention..."
"Any person who has sexual intercourse with a female relative to the third generation under the age of 15 with her consent and the offence leads to her death, to pregnancy or loss of virginity [is punishable by death]."
[34]
[edit]Israel

According to the Israeli Penal Code of 1977 the age of consent in Israel is 16 for any form of sexual relations involving penetration, 14 if no penetration takes place. A special case arises when a person aged 14 or 15 had sexual relations with an older partner; in this case the older partner would be exempt of criminal liability if three conditions are met: the age difference between the partners was less than three years, the younger partner gave consent and the act was done out of "regular friendly relations" and without the abuse of power.[35]

The age of consent in Egypt is 18 years, for heterosexual males and females.

Morocco

The age of consent is 18, per Art. 484 of the Penal Code

Algeria

The age of consent in Algeria is 16 for vaginal intercourse. "Heterosexual Sodomy" (anal and/or oral sex with an opposite-sex partner) is illegal {Article 388 of the Penal Code}. As well as all same-sex sexual conduct {Article 338} and "outrages to public decency" {Article 333}. The punishment for both the first two activities with those under 18 years of age is more severe for the older participant.[citation needed

Tunisia

The age of consent in Tunisia is 20. However, there appears to be a marital exception in the law that allows a minor over 15 to consent to sex with an adult if they are married to the adult

Bahrain

The age of consent in Bahrain is 21

Oman

Sexual activity outside marriage is illegal in Oman.[53] The legal age for marriage is 18 for both men and women.[54]
