It's that time again, the business-end of the CL, ie. the knockout phase. The qualifiers and the group stages separated wheat from chaff and it's time for the big boys to play, sorry AC Milan:D. With new qualifying procedures next year this is likely the last time that we will see 4 English, 4 Spanish and 3 Italian teams at this stage. Based on form it's likely, or should be Barca and ManU in the final, what are the chances they will be paired in the 1/4s or semis?

Okay, let's get our picks on...Let's do it on a round by round basis this year and we can tally up at the end. Here goes.

Atlético - Porto
Lyon - Barcelona
Arsenal - Roma
Internazionale - Man. United
Real Madrid - Liverpool
Chelsea - Juventus
Villarreal - Panathinaikos
Sporting - Bayern

Atlético, Barcelona, Arsenal this one is tight and Roma will probably win but can't go against my Gunners, Man. United, Liverpool, Juventus, Villarreal, Bayern.

Pretty much as...

This round will pretty much go as you predicted, Big Michael. The one thing I'll enjoy the most is watching Real Madrid lose to Liverpool. My beloved Barca should take care of Lyon no problem, although I don't expect a Cakewalk. Inter and Man U. should be the most fun to watch out of this round. Villarreal is contending with a lot of suspensions so that might be tighter than expected.

Chelsea - Juventus
Villarreal - Panathinaikos
Sporting - Bayern

My picks are bold. But I have some toss ups. My heart is with Man U. Roma could take Arsenal. And if Chelsea get their shit together they could beat Juve.

Teams in bold are the ones I think will progress.

A bunch of tricky fixtures: United's, Juventus, Roma.

It's going to be a lot of fun and definitely some surprises.

on a side note I hope those of you planning to watch this have Setanta as TSN is once again showing shuffle board on ice instead.

yep its that time of year again where TSN can claim huge numbers for curling viewership over the knock out round of champions league soccer, yet does anyone know a person who sits down and watches curling from beginning to end?? because I surely cant find one :D

TSN 2 will be carrying it that is unless you are a Rogers subscriber so you can forget it, although it is available on TLN in Italian and RDS in French. Why TSN decides to carry a tournament it knows will not show live in knock out rounds and not someone else have it is beyond me, of course we have a month of shuffle board on ice, its the womens tourney and next up will be the men's.

Good point on the shuffle board, I am afraid to admit I know the rules, but most people I know couldn't tell you the rules, never mind watching it.

Thanks for the heads up. I usually sneak away/late lunch to a pub/restaurant in the core to watch the games. Does any know a pub/bar in the financial district with Setanta? I know McVeigh's has it but perhaps not as rough.

Was wondering when this thread would pop up.

-Inter Milan will KO ManUre. Win at home and tie at Manchester
-Barcelona defeats Lyon. 2-0 Barca 1st game, then probably a tie at home.
-Roma beats Arsenal 1-0 at home and ties at 0 in London. Roma advances
-Atletico fucks it up against Porto.
-Liverpool barely managed against Atl Madrid and will lose to THE REAL MADRID who are peaking at just the right time.
-Juventus beats Chelsea in a really close series.
-Villarreal should beat the Greek team, but with their current slumping form I'm not too sure.
-Bayern beats Sporting.

Yeah, I totally agree. I,d rather watch Paint dry than Shuffle
Board on Ice! Note to TSN: get your Collective Heads out
of your arses! This is knock-out stages of CL. The greatest Game
in the World. Not Beer-Swilling, Trailer Park, boring Curling!!
I,m not to pissed am I? hehe..

It's typical.

As in politics, TSN is catering to rural Canada. The curling fan in Mamora gets precedent over the football fan in Toronto, its always been that way. This way, the cable companies can extract even more money from urban customers. You dont like curling - pay for a specialty channel.

They already know that the guy from Mamora wont.

Fuck off Becks......

Now that I've gotten the profanity out of the way, let's look at how things stand. The match was officiated horrendeously; with United getting a whistle every time they dove. A noble Englishman like Michael Carrick shouldn't spend so much time flopping about like a goldfish out of water. Fergie played his hand, they were going to attack from the left and test the teenager Santon. he proved himself equal to the task, stripping C Ronaldo of the ball on several occasions. United had the confidence of champions while Inter started the game tentitavely, but as the match wore on the Neriazzurri knew they could run with United. The stupidity of United's fans will work to Inter's advantage; UEFA will do the right thing and force United to play the return leg in an empty Old Trafford and it will give Inter all the motivation they need to eliminate them.

If Inter dont knock out United, they might as well move to Dubai.

I never feel as alien in my own country as when curling gets chosen over football. WTF? I can understand this happening in other places in Canada...but Toronto? Stopped in several Mississauga bars on the way home trying to catch Inter/Manchester...and no luck. ALL showing curling.

For the sake of being the only one...I'll pick Sporting over Bayern. Ruled by the heart, not the head.
