I just ordered a free Ubuntu 8.10 install CD from ShipIt.
Last two times doing this, it took 5 weeks to receive their free CD via mail.

It's best to use either the CD you create or the CD Ubuntu sends you to upgrade to Ubuntu 8.10 rather than upgrading online to version 8.10 from 8.04.

You just pop in the new install CD and it will automatically overwrite and upgrade to the 8.10 version from the older version you have on the same linux partition without disturbing the Windows partition if you happen to have a dual boot system.

Ubuntu 8.10 made some really neat improvements and upgrades.
Here's some of them.

Installed Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex

Decided not to wait a month for the free Ubuntu 8.10 CD.
Downloaded it, then burned it as an ISO image, ran it a bit as a Live CD, then installed it with no problem on an 11 yr old P2 PC and it's running fine.
Intrepid Ibex is a nice OS from what I've seen so far.

How's this for cool?

Write Ubuntu to and Install from a USB Drive

Ubuntu has been made available to users as an image for CDs and DVDs to date. But CDs and DVDs are slower, less portable and less convenient than USB sticks. Now, a simple application in Ubuntu will allow users to write Ubuntu to a USB drive, even a modified version of Ubuntu with their data on it, so it can be carried everywhere to plug in and use on any machine.

Just one cool feature of 8.10

Looked this app over.
It is very easy to use. You just set it up, plug in your USB stick and Ubuntu takes over writing a bootable image on that USB stick. Easier to carry around than a laptop. Plug it into any machine and you're up & running along with your own data.

8.10 is very nice, especially with cairo-dock... I use a Mac at work and the dock makes the gnome gui a little nicer. Seems speedier that 8.04 and with more hardware support.

Put 8.10 on a flash drive

Had to try this out.
Got a 'Black Friday special', an 8GB flash drive for $15.

Popped it in and Ubuntu took over completely loading the 8.10 OS on that flash drive. Now I can run 8.10 on any PC by simply plugging it in.

Flash drive used up 4.8GB for Ubuntu and it still has almost 3GB free space left.

I have run Ubuntu on a 6GB partition with no problems but prefer more space just in case you need it. The store had 16GB flash drives on sale for $30 but they were all sold out.

I have the cool dual booted version of 8.04, that did the dual boot for me. Do I boot my system up in Ubuntu to install, or do I boot up in XP and install?

Thanks, total novice!!

Each PC may act a little different

I saw a difference in the Ubuntu install, when using XP and then Vista.
When doing a dual boot setup, it's best to have Windows already on your PC then add Ubuntu. The GRUB bootloader Ubuntu uses works best this way.

I assume you have a dual boot XP/Ubuntu 8.04 and want to upgrade to XP/Ubuntu 8.10.

I put the Ubuntu Live CD in, then rebooted into XP.

Once the PC started you go into the Ubuntu demo unless it autoruns into Ubuntu Demo. From there you go into 'install Ubuntu'. It will give you the choices from wiping out everything and just putting in Ubuntu or doing a dual boot setup. If you want to keep your dual boot select 'manual' when you get to the partition section. Manual will show you the various partitons in your HDD. Since you already have 8.04 installed, select that linux partition and Ubuntu will format that linux partition and install 8.10 in that same linux partition where 8.04 is now, leaving the rest of your HDD with XP untouched.

You will also be given a choice to do a clean install or to import your old settings over from XP or 8.04 to this new 8.10 install. The choice is yours. Once you make your selections Ubuntu will take over and install 8.10. All my installs so far have been flawless. Once the install is complete all that's left is to install all the 8.10 updates and you're good to go.
