It seems like the liberals still don't get the purpose of tariffs up to now...when importers price go high, consumers are forced to buy local. Buy Canadian products and you won't feel the weight of these tariffs... Americans will do the same....Canadian manufacturers whose main market are Canadians are enjoying a spike on sales....US will have the same positive impact. Remove your TDS glasses once in a while.
Jesus, you really are a turnip.
First, of course the goal of tariffs is to encourage/protect local production. But, the issue is that in today's integrated economies this doesn't work like it did 100 years ago. Look at those MAGA supporters who run small businesses. They thought because they built things like knives in the USA, they would not face any issues with tariffs. Until they realized that a lot of their equipment (like professional knife sharpeners) and raw materials (like steel) are imported, as are replacement parts of equipment they already own. They've seen their costs jump. The reality is that not all products have a domestic equivalent. I mean, the US or Canada cannot grow coffee beans...so, they need to be imported.
So, just think for a second about one specific item. Aluminum. Used in thousands of products, from fridges to airplanes. Canada exports a lot of aluminium to the US, especially from Quebec. Quebec has cheaper energy, needed to run smelters. Trump, the stable economic genius, has imposed a 50% tariff on aluminium. So, according to you, it would make a lot of sense for the Alcoa or another company to build smelters in the USA. Sure. Fine. Go for it.
BUT.....how long will that take, and will it be significantly cheaper than imported aluminum? Best case scenario is it would take five years (at the minimum) to build up a smelter to replace the imported capacity (well, at least some of the imported capacity). And, the reality is, Trump will be out of office by then (or sooner), and will his replacement or the next president follow this ruinous economic policy? Probably not. Is it worth the massive cost of building more smelters in the US for something that might not be needed even next week??
And, while Canadian companies are seeing a boon on domestic purchases, we sell a lot of raw material. I'm not buying tonnes of potash, softwood lumber, nickle or copper. You probably aren't. So are those producers just going to go out of business?
So, stop pretending that this is TDS. This is reality, not a made up greivence about Mango Mussolini. This is economic theory showing the truth, that tariffs will hurt the US economy by raising the price of goods. Trump is bragging about all the tariff revenue, but what he's really doing is showing the largest tax increase in American history, and nobody in congress voted for this.
