Two Afghan children beheaded in separate incidents

(Reuters) - An adolescent boy and a young girl have been beheaded in two separate incidents in Afghanistan, local officials and police said on Friday, in the latest brazen attacks that have raised fresh questions about a splintering Taliban.

A 12-year-old boy was kidnapped and killed in southern Kandahar province on Wednesday, his severed head placed near his body to send a warning to police, said provincial governor spokesman Jawid Faisal.

The brother of the boy, neither of whom were named by officials, was a member of the Afghan Local Police (ALP), a U.S.-trained militia charged with making Afghans in Taliban strongholds, like Kandahar, feel more secure, Faisal said.

"It's a Taliban warning to the ALP and to others who support the government," Faisal said of the killing, which happened in Kandahar's Panjwai district.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf denied the group was involved.

Separately, a 6-year-old girl was beheaded in eastern Kapisa province on Thursday, said provincial police chief Abdul Hamed.



"We are not sure if she was beheaded by her family or the Taliban, but we know the Taliban control the area," Hamed said of the killing in Jalukhil village. He added that he could not send investigators to the area out of fears for their safety.

The murders follow the shooting or beheading of 17 young revellers attending a party in southern Helmand province this week, which officials said was the work of the Taliban, a charge the group also denied.

That massacre raised fresh concerns about Taliban leaders' grip on their scattered fighters, amid on-again, off-again peace moves by the group with the Afghan government.

It also suggested that there are grassroots insurgent fighters who are not in a mood for compromise.

"What we're seeing could be a new tactic by the Taliban to behead civilians to intimidate the population," said Faisal.

In Kandahar's Zhari district, officials also said on Friday that a 16-year-old boy accused by the Taliban of spying for the government was beheaded and skinned in late July.

Such incidents highlight the difficulty that Taliban leaders have in enforcing discipline across an estimated 20,000 fighters spread from Afghanistan to Pakistan.

The central Taliban leadership is trying to improve the group's image in case it wants to push forward tentative reconciliation steps and perhaps even enter mainstream politics. But some militant units are hard to control, roaming the countryside and attacking those deemed immoral.

NATO will withdraw most of its combat troops by the end of 2014, leaving Afghan forces in the lead security role.

Yes, only a small percentage are extremists, but...none really wish to oppose their own faith at its roots.

When someone commits a crime here in Canada for example, someone goes out and robs a cottage with six of his buddies but one is only along for the ride and does not commit the actual crime with his friends he is automatically guilty by association. If he does nothing to stop the crime or anything to assist the police by turning the other culprits in he is too considered guilty.

One has to ask do the rest really want change? Are they really innocent bystanders? Too be honest I feel it is a lost cause, a very big lost cause to be trying to make changes in countries where our own come back in body bags and sometimes it appears that efforts are unwanted.

In light of other news articles I have read today I am almost willing to accept anything that happens. When I read that someone spends years in jail for murdering someone and comes out years later and can afford a condo paying close to 163,000.00 of the 175,000.00 and a week later pays off the rest of the cost of the condo, marries another murder while in prison and while in prison has 3 of his children. hmmmmm

But, for the most part it should be taken to court and the person questioned as to why they did not leave and why they did not turn their friends over to the police and be found guilty even if not as guilty as the actual participants.

Pakistan 'Koran plot' imam remanded in blasphemy case


A Pakistani imam has been remanded in custody, accused of planting pages of the Koran among burnt pages in the bag of a Christian girl held for blasphemy.

The girl was detained two weeks ago near the capital Islamabad after an angry mob demanded she be punished.

Imam Khalid Chishti allegedly told a witness that this was a "way of getting rid of Christians", a prosecutor said.

The girl, named as Rimsha, is said to be about 14 and to have learning difficulties.

The case has sparked international condemnation.

Earlier this week, a court extended Rimsha's detention at a maximum-security prison by a further two weeks.

Her father has said he fears for his daughter's life and for the safety of his family. He has called on Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari to pardon her.

Rimsha's parents have been taken into protective custody following threats, and many other Christian families have fled the neighbourhood.

Pakistan's strict blasphemy laws are often used to settle personal vendettas, correspondents say.

Last year two leading politicians were assassinated after speaking out against the legislation.

'Proven conspiracy'
Imam Chishti appeared in the Islamabad court with a white blindfold and shackled hands.

There was a large police presence as he was ushered into the building.

"The imam was arrested after his deputy Maulvi Zubair and two others told a magistrate he added pages from the Koran to the burnt pages brought to him by a witness," an investigator Munir Hussain Jaffri said.

He said Mr Zubair and some others had told the imam not to interfere, urging him to "give the evidence to the police as he got it".

According to Mr Jaffri, Imam Chishti had told them: "You know this is the only way to expel the Christians from this area."

The investigator said the cleric had been arrested at his home on Saturday under Pakistan's blasphemy law.

"By putting these pages in the ashes he also committed desecration of the Holy Koran and he is being charged with blasphemy," he said.

The girl's lawyer told AFP news agency that Rimsha "should be acquitted immediately", as it had been "fully proven that it was a conspiracy".

I dated a girl back in the day who studied world religion in university. She was very critical of Islam after learning about it. She warned me back then (mid 90's) that it will be a matter of time before we are engaged in a holy war with Islam. I believe the start of that was 9/11. She quoted numerous passages in the Qu'ran that advocate that it is a Muslim's duty to protect their faith by killing all infidels (read non Muslims). Unfortunately every Muslim has a different interpretation of protecting their faith. To one it may be an honour killing of a family member who disgraced their family name. To another it may be the perceived westernization of their country (Iran for example). And to another it may be something as simple as a book or cartoon that is critical of Islam.

People of Muslim faith should be ashamed at what people are doing in the name of their religion. Yet they don't speak out enough. As Dennis Miller put it where are the moderate Muslims and why haven't they declared a fatwa against all the assholes within their own organization?
