Well, I'll bet you a thousand dollars that nobody on this site knows a thousand people personally. Just because someone follows you or friends you or whatever, you don't actually know them. So do those thousand acquaintances actually care about what you liked or think about something?
The point wasn't that you need to have a thousand followers for Twitter to be worthwhile. It's better than mass-email with even 10 followers/friends. Sure, some of your followers are bound to be bots, but the very act of clicking "Follow" indicates that your audience likes your feed and wants more of what you're saying. That's exactly why I follow certain people. I couldn't give a swimming fuck about the minutiae of people's lives (so I don't follow celebrities), but if someone has a history of tweeting links to really interesting articles/videos, you bet I'll follow them. As I said earlier, it's a wonderful way to personalize your content stream. Cool stuff about economics, science, tech, and what-have-you is easily over 75% of what my friends tweet about.

Or am I just being old-fashioned?
No, but you're clinging to its common caricatures. Twitter isn't just people posting about their bowel movements. It's also people having public conversations (some of which are mundane, some of which are chock full of witty repartee). It's also people posting links to insightful content. And because it's customizable, you don't have to put up with useless tidbits about the sex lives of complete strangers.

Seriously, I can't think of one person I'd actually like to follow on Twitter.
Start by following publications you like (e.g. The New Yorker, Fast Company, etc.). Twitter will start recommending people to follow one you subscribe to enough feeds.

i have twitter account....I still just don't get it. I mean I kind of understand how it works...but just don't get why people are so into it.
It's interesting when there are a lot of people using the same hashtag to have a real-time discussion on any number of topics..

It's a way to make computers understand what you're talking about. If you're chiming in on last night's Jays game, you add #Jays, #BlueJays, or #TorontoBlueJays to your message (no spaces allowed, that's why words are mushed together). For example, you would tweet:

"What the hell was up with Bautista last night? He was phoning it in. #Jays"

That way, Twitter's massive army of computers can show your tweet to everybody else who's talking about the game.
