I'm more than capable of changing the oil on my cars. It's not very hard to do. When I can take it to my local mechanic and have him change it in for $50 and be in and our in 30 minutes, why on earth would I do it myself. That's why having someone else do it, is an absolute no-brainer.

Don't give up! Learn from your mistakes, try again next time.....and make all new mistakes. You'll learn from those, too.
However if someone over and over completely fucks things up, maybe they shouldn't be trying.

Assuming he isn't making up a story of woe for the attention or the laughs which I am inclined to believe.

My mechanic charges me $90 Ram truck - full syntheic. $39 honda civic regular...I see him 4 times a year for change oil...i see him 6 times a year fishing...it's one less thing to worry about for me...i would do some tweaking on my home except for electrical...but never on my vehicles...it's a big hassle bing on the shoulder on highways...

probably the best option is to go to youtube before anything else...type the model of your car and go from there...TS definitely went in blind with only the basic tools to begin with...remember some model cars needs special tools...

The pleasures one has been doing it for themselves. I’ve been working on cars since I was 18 years old, once you get over the fear factor the rest is history. First I don’t trust rhino ramps! They dig into the asphalt on the nice warm day the UV rays from the sun deteriorate plastic I used timber. Very easy to do their heavy therefore they will grow legs and disappear. Never gained under a car is not supported by Jack’s sense or something that will crumble, a few years ago somebody down the street was working underneath her car, the chain broke and he’s no longer with us. But the tire jack stands anything solid underneath the car. I’ve heard stories were someone stunned the oil change forgot to put the drain plug back in ended up in a very big mess LOL. Also make sure the old rubber gasket that’s on your oil filter comes off when you remove the old oil filter if not once again it will be a big mess. Keep a couple of empty containers around so you can put the used oil back in and dropped off wherever you get your oil recycle. In the long run yes it does save you money when you figure you buy an oil filter for around 10 bucks and 5 L of synthetic oil for around 40 bucks. The dealership charges about 120 the same thing okay so I don’t put my time equation. You don’t end up with the horror stories of someone going to Canadian tire’s or an oil change and they dropped the car off the hoist, or tightening the oil filter to around 300 foot-pounds. As for the story it might be true but this guy had problems doing his oil, learn from your mistakes! The neighbor across the street decided to get ice on his front windshield what does the clown do he boils a kettle of water then proceeds to board over the front windshield sure enough new windshield after that because of the cracks. I also heard somebody oiling their brake pads because a squeak when I heard that I shot coke through my nose with laughter

I can see the appeal of changing your own oil and brakes. I do my own brakes, saves good money (a visit to my favourite SP), and I can chose premium parts, plus is a fun Saturday afternoon project.
Oil, is a different story. The work and the mess it takes, is not worth the money saved (IMHO). I rather pay the dealer $100 to have the car ready when I come out of work, no time wasted waiting either.
As per Stinkynuts’ experience, that’s exactly it, you don’t get experience without screwing up. Next time you will know what to expect and be prepared for it.
How else are you supposed to grow as a human being if you are only going to stick to what you know?

I have no mechanical skills at all.
But my advice is please don't do your own brake work if you can't do an oil change. If not done properly you could kill someone.

Hope your neighbours aren't assholes and call the Ministry of the Environment over the oil on the road and your driveway.
And don’t do your own oil change, if you can’t change the wipers! 😂

Oil is messy, some people live for that stuff, others don't. Also I am not equipped to go under the car and I don't like confined spaces so a DIY jack up isn't going to o it for me.

Yes you can only grow by going beyond your experiences but his experiences seem to suggest that he is dangerously incompetent at auto repair to an extreme extent [or more likely he is taking the piss and telling porkies]. What is the point of experience if you can't learn. If you tell a legitimate Italian Businessman [tm] that he is a donkey raping cock master and he with his crew beats the shit out of you, the next step isn't to try it with a bunch of motorcycle enthusiasts.

Also try new things sure, but operating on that tumour by yourself isn't a good idea... even if "It's not a tumah", small steps. And again assuming he is telling the truth, he should have known this will end badly. Also Oil changes can end very badly if you mess up, beyond glass embedded in skin [like really glass, come on]

Here in Quebec it's mandatory to put winter tires on, so I just have the mechanic change my oil at the same they are put on and then removed in the spring. Oil changes aren't expensive, probably the cheapest form of auto maintenance you can do. I always suspected that changing your own oil to save $60 or whatever is simply more trouble than it's worth. The OP just confirmed it.

Cars made in the past 12 years are difficult to do simple things that our grandparent were able to do with 3 tools.
Especially Bimmers. They’re designed so that you have to go back to the dealer and pay their exorbitant prices.

Even getting a wheel alignment takes 3 Engineers plus 2 mechs.

I can't believe how freaking hard it was to get the wipers off my BMW. Took literally twenty minutes, they were extremely hard to remove. Let go of the wiper blade, and it slammed down on the windshield. Next time I was extremely careful, but at the last moment

Exactly. Every little thing is almost twice as expensive. An oil change requires synthetic, and costs me $120. My Bimmer had many oil leaks, costing me thousands. The alignment cannot be done at any mechanic, it requires a European car speciality shop. As welll as the rear differential fluid change.

I took my car to Speedy, and they said I need to replace my rear differential, at a cost of $5,000. I noticed that everywhere I take my car, they quote me outrageous prices (sometimes because they don't want to do the job). I've had Canadian Tire even refuse to look at my BMW, the manager told me to take it to a dealer. I was shocked. I know that BMWs are not only finicky, and very hard to work with, they also require special equipment.

I bought by BMW for $10,000 five years ago, and put in $15,000 in repairs and maintenance. I would have been better off buying a new BMW and selling it now. I would have paid the same amount.

Basically, my car is now worthless. The windshield is crack from me botching the wiper replacement. There is an oil leak, the car makes a loud noise since the rear differential is shot. The rear power windows are broken. The interior is stained because I put my tires on the bacseat without plastic. There is rust and body damage.

Worst of all is the reaction I get from people. People seem almost embarassed for me. They have almost a condescending attitude, since they think that I'm someone who's trying to look rich by driving a BMW, when if in fact I'm driving a piece of shit.

My logic at the time was that it was a great value. The car I have was, brand new, about $45-50,000 including taxes. I therefore bought it for the value aspect of it, more than anything. For example, I only buy used iPhones that are a few years old, since they offer the best value for the money. Little did I know that the car would literally have one problem after anohter, after another and cost me an arm and a leg.

I was fed up with all the maintenance, so decided to save some money. I bought rims for my winter tires, so I can change them myself. This saves $200 each year, since there are two swaps @ $100 each, every year. The oil change was next on the list. I invested hundreds of dollars ($400 for the rim, about $400 for the oil change equipment (rhino ramps, filter wrench, drain bucket, socket wrench, filter, oil). So far I have yet to recoup any investments I've made.

My last break job (front and rear) cost close to $2,000. I am planning to give it a shot. I've researched on YouTube, and honestly, it doesn't seem too bad.

By the way, I did get the drain plug removed. Some homeless kid was walking buy, and he was able to get it off in seconds. I gave him $25, an ice cream, and a ride. But now I can do oil changes on my own.

I change my own power steering fluid with a turkey baster syringe.
I am using Amsoil synthetic power steering fluid.

BMW AUDI PORSCHE MERCEDES. Over priced junk. After fucking you in the chops with the sticker price, they fuck you up the ass with repairs, maintenance and spare parts. The whole exercise is about paying 10 times the price for that warm feeling you get stuck in traffic.
