Hamas could have planned to attack the military patrols or bases nearby. Instead they spent two years prepping for attacks on Israeli towns, rehearsing breaking in to houses safe rooms.
First, before you gaslight me: Hamas targeted military and civilian targets. They are within their rights to target military but its a war crime to target civilians and they should be taken to the Hague along with Israeli leaders for all war crimes.
All this was targeting military and acceptable:
