No longer the darling of the media anymore either.

Back in February 2014, before he became prime minister, Justin Trudeau told a Liberal policy convention in Montreal that:

“People in Ottawa talk about the ‘Conservative base’ as if it is some angry mob to be feared. They’re wrong. As all of you know, the 5.8 million Canadians who voted Conservative (in the 2011 election) aren’t your enemies. They’re your neighbours.”

On Oct. 19, 2015, hours after winning the election and becoming prime minister-designate, Trudeau said in his “Sunny Ways” victory speech: “I want to remind everyone, as I’ve said many times over the course of this campaign: Conservatives are not our enemies, they’re our neighbours. Leadership is about bringing people of all different perspectives together.”

But that was then and this is now.
Now, Trudeau accuses Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer of being a closet white supremacist.

True, he’s not calling everyone who votes Conservative white supremacists, but if you support someone who, in Trudeau’s world, is sympathetic to white supremacists, what does that make you?

Of course, Trudeau’s claim is silly.

Scheer has repeatedly denounced white supremacists and a false case that Trudeau is soft on Islamist terrorism can as easily be made, using the same “guilt-by-association” tactics he’s been using on Scheer.

Then again, everyone plays hardball in Canadian politics.

But what’s laughable is for Trudeau to portray himself as above the fray, claiming as he did at an October 2018 Liberal fundraiser that while, “We are now looking at perhaps what will be the most divisive and negative and nasty political campaign in Canada’s history … I will not engage in personal attacks and none of our team will either.”

Right.

Here’s another gem from Trudeau’s 2015 victory speech:

“I also want to specifically thank my good friends Katie Telford and Gerald Butts. Katie and Gerry are two of the smartest, toughest, hardest working people you will find anywhere. They share with me the conviction that politics doesn’t have to be negative and personal to be successful that … you can appeal to the better angels of our nature, and you can win while doing it.”

Telford, who featured prominently in Trudeau’s Lavscam disaster, is Trudeau’s chief-of-staff, while Butts, Trudeau’s best friend and principal secretary, resigned in February over Lavscam, although he said he had done nothing wrong.

But as for Butts believing, as Trudeau said, that “politics doesn’t have to be negative and personal to be successful” and that “you can appeal to the better angels of our nature, and … win,” that’s quite a stretch for anyone who followed Butts’ Twitter account while he was Trudeau’s principal secretary.

For example in February 2018, when Butts blew a gasket because people all over the world were laughing about Trudeau’s oh-so politically correct response to a woman who referred to “mankind” in her question to him, by replying, “we (presumably the royal ‘we’) like to say peoplekind … because it’s more inclusive.”

Butts tweeted: “The lesson to take from this joke being torqued by Infowars and other alt-right nazi friends of the Rebel is they’re paying attention. Game on, #TeamTrudeau.”

Except media from the BBC, to the London Times, to the Guardian, to the Washington Post to the New York Times, among many others, all of whom would be horrified to be identified with the “alt-right,” were joking about it as well.

Anyway, it should be a fun election. What with Trudeau taking the high road and all.
