Hey Folks!

Just cut down a diseased tree today and need to engage a stump removal service with a proper grinding machine to remove the remnants. Probably a two minute job provided you own a stump grinder. Can you recommend anybody?

Thanks,

HG

Tee OH!
Some Home Depot locations rent out Stump Grinders. Yes, it's like a 5 minute job. Just use your common sense and be safe.

Hopefully the tree was less than 1 foot in diameter, otherwise you would need City of Toronto permit to chop down.

I don't know whether a tree removal service would say anything?

I agree with Red, just dig it out yourself.
Have you ever dug out the stump of a good-sized tree yourself? I presume you have, but if so you must know that it is not a job to be undertaken lightly: it can be a hell of a job. The problem is that you can't just cut the first roots you come across: you must cut a section of them out maybe a foot or more wide to allow you access to the lower roots/soil. And heaven help you if you are in in rocky soil! Tools needed: pick-axe, axe, shovel, maybe a saw although getting soil in a saw blade will ruin it quickly I think.

It's a good challenge, although, and I mean this seriously, don't undertake it if you have a bad heart.

Like various folks have said, you can rent the machine and DIY. If you're after someone to grovel down there for you with chips in their face, then take away the debris, I'd suggest you start thinking of it as at least a half-day job you'll be paying for.

Call tree removal company in your area. Small stump is 1-2 hour job depending on access.

yes- i have dug up plenty of stumps. it can be a big job depending on the size of the tree. but its satisfying when its done. there is something to be said for doing it yourself

I AGREE completely! Prying one of those monsters out of the ground is a challenge worthy of any pioneer-spirited man out there. Last one I did I got it completely free but it was way too heavy to lift/push out, so I chained it up and dragged it out with my vehicle. It's still slowly rotting in a corner of my yard.

This is good advice. Most trees supplied by gardeners have the main root snipped so the roots tend to spread out rather than down. If you go around the tree with a shovel and expose them you can cut the roots with anything from an axe to a small powered saw like they use to cut pipes. Then you (and maybe one or two others) can pry the stump out relatively easily.

the stump removal service can be costly and if the stump is relatively inaccessible they can do a lot of collateral damage. I used a drill to bore down into the stump, poured in a chemical coctail on a regular schedule and after 3 years it is rotting away. Just thought you might like an option?
