Can someone give me the short scoop on trains Hamilton <-> Toronto? The GO website assumes that I know what I'm doing and I don't :)

I'm driving from Buffalo into Toronto on business next week, but I also have a couple of things I need to do in Hamilton and Burlington (on separate days - lots of back & forth). Since I don't need my car at all once I'm in Toronto can I just park my car at the train station in Burlington (some place called Aldershot is closest?) and take the train up to TO, then back down, and then back up? Would my car be safe there for two days?

Thanks much - KK

I"ve had relatives leave their vehicle at the Oakville Go station for 2 days with no problems. I'm not positive if there is any type of time limit as to how long you can leave a vehicle on their property. I would say you shouldn't have any problems.

Aldershot is further away . Coming from the QEW you would just drive into Burlington and take your GO Train cut off . To go to Aldershot you would cut off to the 403 Hamilton bound in Burlington and go around the Bay . Take the Waterdown Road cut off , cross the bridge , turn left and there's the train station . Burlington is really a very busy place for the trains . Might be hard to get a good parking spot .

I myself would have no problems parking for a few days in their lot. Just be careful if you park at Aldershot . Not all go trains will go to Aldershot but end up staying in Burlington. You would then need to take the GO Bus back to Aldershot . Friggen pain if you screw up looking at the schedule .

Schedule might be changed a bit with the opening of Go Train service to Hamilton in recent days .

The GO website is useless and confusing. Went to Niagara Falls a few weeks ago - had to take the train to Aldershot and have someone pick me up. On the way back, took a GO bus from the Falls to Burlington station. Took forever to get home. :(

Station is monitored by CCTV. But try to park at an end spot to avoid car damage as always
GO to toronto is good but slow.......the station also has VIA trains direct from Aldershot to Union station
Which is direct except for one stop in Oakville

I have left my car overnight in Burlington a few times and never had any issue. I find the GO website fairly easy to use. I believe every GO train now goes to Aldershot.

Thanks again for all the help on this. I was able to get in and out of the city a couple times as needed and it all worked out.

I would never do it again though.

When I arrived at Aldershot there were no, and I mean zero, parking spaces. Cars were parked up in the weeds and on any flat area adjacent to the parking lot. I was trying to pull my SUV up into a wooded area when a kindly stranger who was leaving took pity on me and offered his spot. Otherwise I'd have been screwed.

When I returned to my car it was surreal. As it was Saturday I thought the lot would be somewhat emptied out. When I exited up into the station it was a madhouse of cars looking for parking. A nice women immediately approached me and asked if I was taking a car out of parking and if so if her family could have my spot. As she was talking to me another guy offered me $5 for my spot, and right after that a woman offered me $10. It was insane.

As I rode up and down the line all the lots I could see were filled to capacity. WTF? How are people supposed to ride the trains if they can't park?

Regarding GO parking lots -- from what I've been told, parking space always fills up by 8AM on weekdays. Also, I would expect Saturday afternoons/evenings to be especially busy as many people would want to take the GO train into Union station for various activities (e.g. watch the Leafs or Jays games, travel to Centre Island, see the Pan Am games). So my advice is, if you are going to be travelling to Toronto again and thinking of taking the GO train, get to the parking lot by 7AM.

Parked at Aldershot mid week about 11am and found one of two remaining spots.

I did notice quite a few empty reserved spots. Not sure if they were available or people didn't show, but, something I would look into next time.

Edit: Nevernind. I was thinking you could rent by the day. Oops.

"The cost to rent a reserved parking space is $90 per month, including all taxes for a minimum six-month term."

Never had a problem finding a spot in Burlington. Didn't matter the day of the week or time of day. Might be a bit harder now due to sections being roped off for repaving.

Interesting, when you say "Burlington" do you mean the Burlington other than Aldershot? Maybe I should give that a try.

Yes, Burlington. Go station is on Plains road. The lot on Fairview is alot smaller. The bigger lot and parking garage is off Plains road.
