Traffic ticket, guilty

Was given a speeding ticket late last year, and when the cop gave me the ticket, he suggested that he might not make it to court. Said, don’t feel I don’t care if I don’t show up to court, just that I have better things to do.

Pleaded not guilty, and went to court last week, sure enough the cop shows up. Another cop told me that they are compelled to show up now. I told the prosecutor that I would plead guilty, and leave. They still had a discussion and the actual speed I was going was brought up in court, as the speed was reduced for the ticket. Anyway, my $40 ticket was increased to $45 with an added court service fee.

This was in Peel. The days when the cops did not show up could be gone.

Next time make 'em work harder for it. Go with a friend or relative, hang around at the back and see if the cop is there for other cases. If so, have your "representative" say you had to be away for an emergency and request an ajournment. The first request for ajournment is usually granted with no fourther questions asked. Maybe you'll be luckier the second time.

Actually I'm not sure how they do it in peel. It's been so long since I've been to traffic court in Toronto I don't even know if you can still hang around open hearings to determine if your officer is around for other cases?

BTW you're lucky you even got to court. It seems these days the MO is to "lose" or "misadddress" your notification, hold the hearing and convict you in your absence.

Not only do you never recieve your court date, but no notice of conviction or subsequent notice of fine default - the first you hear of it is a notice of Suspension for non-payment. I guess they hope most people will just pay all of it rather than go through the re-openning hassle on time.

The flagrant disregard for people's due process on the part of this city and province is begining to feel disturbing.
