Any trades people here? Saw a CTV News report that Toronto/Ontario is short 100,000 trades people. This will only get worse as current trades people start retiring.

Not in the trades but worked in industry. It's very hard for companies to keep trades people. They are in such demand they always seem to leaving one company for higher pay at another.
A friend had stone mason over to do some work and the mason told him he was booked solid for the next 10 months.

I believe it. Try getting a roofer and/or electrician. Almost impossible for any job under $2,000.

The problem is that our universities are turning out graduates who have no idea on how to fix and/or build things. We need more trade school graduates.

Problem goes back many years when they dropped shop classes in high school.

Schools have been pushing computer work for so long and now is a massive gap in trade work
I would also wager you can make a better living with a red seal trade in many cases with benefits and a pension plan
The roofer I finally found said he would try to "squeeze" me in if he finishes a job early.

The electrician I found said he is really busy on construction sites and movie shoots. However, he said he has a week off between Christmas and New Year.

The Ontario Gov’t is going to high schools to make the pitch for trades people. I know a drywall installer and taper making $300k/yr

Back in the old days there were plenty of farm kids used to driving large machines, fixing them and doing hard physical labour. With greater automation that is all gone now. Some city kid is only about half as productive as those Jamaicans and Central Americans we bring over to pick our fruit and veg... and you can get similar pay for much less effort.

Problem would go away within a couple of years if the government would open schools in the Punjab teaching to Canadian standards [and working on the English]
Those people are sex nuts and retard strong for a chance to get to Canada. Every third Punjabi language film seems to make reference to it in one way or another. When a child is born in the Punjab they don't cry when slapped on the tukus they say "I want to move to Canada!"

Better than having them come over for a 2 year diploma that will probably not get them hired and they have to go home before scoring PR. Also better than having Engineers driving cabs.

Heard that Ontario schools are no longer offering "streaming". Looks like we will be producing more paper pushers.

True story: I sold a bike to a young woman a few years ago and gave her a free bell. She asked how do you install the bell? I said with a screwdriver. She asked what is a screwdriver?

I'm an Electrical contractor always hard finding good workers, even when u treat them well. They leave for .50 more...now they are going to recognize licenses over seas and give them a license when they get here....joke takes 5yrs for license and 8 for masters...now these guys can bring bullshit documents from thier country and get a license here with no Canadian experience...I know this because I hired one and he had his buddy back home pay someone for bullshit license from a corrupt county...use to be they did few years here before we let them write exam.
Be careful gents....these guys do not do things correctly they just take the money and run.
If your in a jam reach out...will see what I can do...if your one of the lovely ladies you will move to the front of the list 😉

Canada is a mess. They were pitching this stuff when I was in High School.

But told everyone don't worry, the Corporation will take care of you and just give in to Capitalism. Now, the big companies are eliminate every job possible and the government has realized they don't have the manpower to push their 'look busy' infrastructure projects.

Fuck them. They don't care about the working class, they just want more mules to keep pulling the economy along.

You also have to blame the culture surrounding the trades. From an immigrant standpoint, no brown or Asian parent want their kids getting into trades because of the stupid elitist notion where they think office jobs are superior in the social ladder.
And then there's the internal culture of tradespeople. I know people working as union folk for those in the trades and those who train and supervise apprentices. Way too many of them have such a misogynistic and patriarchal view of life that they just don't take women. And the few women who do get in don't last very long because no amount of money is worth that kind of mental torture of being in an all-boys club. And if you're a guy who's doesn't think share the same views as the rest of the gang, you're either left out or barred from future opportunities.

this has been an issue since the 1960s. canada welcomed immigrants with skilled trades with open arms.

the problem is that its a dying field since not many people want to get into it. women have little to no interest even with financial incentives. there has been a negative outlook on trades people since they work with their hands and dont have a university degree. all kinds of negative stereo types. most trades are dirty, dangerous, work in extreme temperature areas, long grueling work hours and conditions for pay that is less than a desk jockey in HR.

why would someone sign up for that when the incentives arent nearly as attractive as other opportunities?

I will agree on some of your points however women dont want trade jobs typically. there are exceptions but women typically like people jobs that have social interaction versus things. just as why there are a very small percentage of women working in stem field even with financial incentives. typically male dominated, just like nursing or teaching is female dominated. as well I can also understand why men may have a negative outlook on women in trades. as a man you are expected to lift 100 lbs. a woman is not expected to lift the same 100lbs since she is more than likely physically unable to do so by herself. however men and women will get the same wages but not be required to do the same work. this would create resentment which is reasonable.

The social engineers will argue that it is "unfair" to ask a woman to lift 100 lbs.

Your comment about pay is comical. You think a desk jockey makes more than a licensed electrician, plumber, finish carpenter etc?
