"Half of Toronto's 16 to 19-year-olds have received their first dose, city says

Young adults in Toronto have really stepped up on the COVID-19 vaccine front.

Fully half of people aged 16 to 19 in our city have now received a first dose of vaccine, and most of them got the jab in the last week at one of the city-run, partner-run or pop-up clinics held across Toronto.

Considering that the province only started offering vaccines to those aged 12 to 17 in the last week, this 50% coverage among Toronto’s youth cohort is very good news.

Mayor Tory started the weekend with a Saturday morning visit to the pop-up clinic at Danforth Collegiate and Technical Institute — a clinic that’s part of the Team Toronto Sprint Strategy.

Supported by Michael Garron Hospital and East Toronto Health Partners, the pop-up clinic is open to students age 12 and older who attend Danforth Collegiate and Technical Institute, Greenwood Secondary School, Earl Haig Public School and Wilkinson Junior Public School.

Their family members are also welcome.

The clinic, which opened at 8 a.m. on Saturday, will run until its 500 doses are all administered.

And vaccine vultures take note: those 500 vaccines are intended for the local community.

Province-wide, the go-getters in the 16 to 19 age group are closing-in on 52% first dose coverage, a boon to community protection and to hastening the end of this pandemic.

Around 30% of Ontario’s young people age 12 to 17 — approximately 48,000 people — have also received a first COVID-19 vaccine.

Mayor John Tory offered special thanks on Saturday, “To the families who are coming out to get vaccinated by the thousands to make sure they are protected and their community is protected.

“Getting vaccinated as soon as possible is the right thing to do so that we can bring this pandemic to an end.”

Councillor Joe Cressy, who is also chair of the Toronto Board of Health, thanked teenagers in Toronto for taking immunization seriously and for taking action to help protect themselves and others.

Cressy also announced an upcoming youth vaccine blitz to be held June 14 to 28, with details coming soon.

That vaccine drive will be a partnership with SickKids Hospital.

One of the first two people to get the shot in GB has already died of something other than Covid. A 15 year old getting the shot today might live to 150. That's less than an extra year of life vs. a whole lifetime. Not much vaccine hesitancy in that age group...
