I have a copy of the Toronto Sun today.
First time in a couple years.
Only about 40 pages, seems like yesterday’s new that I already read online.
No car or stereo ads either.
How are they going to continue?

I had to do some painting a few weeks back and bought the Sunday Sun thinking I would have a lot of newspaper to cover things up with. I was surprised at how small it was.

There were newspaper boxes outside the building where I used to work. One day it was pouring rain, and I saw a guy starring at the boxes, pondering which one to buy. Finally he bought The Sun, then put it on top of his head before walking over to his car.

Doubt if it would work now

When I was in high school in the mid/late 90's me and my buddies would always get free copies of the paper by lightly banging on the box at a certain spot and it would open. It was a stupid trick but made us feel pretty fucking cool at the time.

Wow, I've met The Fonz!

In the 60's, newspaper boxes were open, and you paid on the 'honour system'. Having a newspaper route was very valuable to teenagers, as well. When a guy didn't want the job anymore, the going rate to buy the route was six months' earnings, including tips.

Sunday edition of the Toronto Star is the same. Sport section is 2 pages smaller than the obituary section. Best is the insight section, bit they still have many ads, still not worth buying.

POS paper anyway, written at (at most) a grade 5 reading level.
But more to your point, print news is on its way out. Which on its own is not disastrous, however a lot of actually good journalism will go with it, with the vacuum filled by nonsense misinformation on social media. We will all be dumber and less informed as a result.

Probably applies to the Canadian Sun chain as the UK one.
Sun readers don't care who runs the country as long as she has big tits.

I used to read the Sun religiously every day when it was my morning ritual to go to McDonald’s where it was free with my coffee and McMuffin.

15 years later I have detoxed from the McD’s and the writing of the Sun.

The Sun has never been considered a source of outstanding journalism as their articles are usually very brief and headlines that appeal to shock value. When I finally gave up on it was when a Canadian pornstar died a few years ago and the article written was more like a Porn Hall of Fame induction release, listing many of the more outrageous titles of her films. This is a girl with a family and friends who are grieving her loss and the Sun treated it like it was just a big joke. People do what they have to do for a living and there's no reason to mock her death by doing that.

The Sun is perfect for lining the bottom of the bird cage. Nothing more.

I hope they go under. I heard a Leafs nation facebook group boycotted the Sun since they publish a bloody John Tavares on the cover. The Sun had always been a garbage tabloid, it should be ranked with Rebel news.

Maybe some of you are not old enough, but the Toronto Sun had some superb conservative editors and columnists. George Jonas, Peter Worthington, Lorrie Goldstein, Christie Blatchford, Sue-Ann Levy, and Mark Bonokoski come to mind, among many more. It has been a distinctive voice.

I think most of the journalists themselves are perfectly fine but the direction of the paper itself is really bad. It's basically just news briefs and opinion pieces. There's no real investigative journalism and headlines and photos that are more fitting for a supermarket tabloid, as glamphotograher says.
The Sun is almost embarrassing to read. Pre covid when I would visit clients, they often had the daily newspapers in the reception area to read while waiting for your meeting. The Sun was never among them.

That was then, but this is now. All the folks you mentioned were giants, today, not many can even hold a candle to them.

I agree that they have/had some columnists worth reading, but as a whole it's a POS rag.

The cover with a bloody Tavares was particularly insensitive. Good on Dubas for calling them out.

It’s never been a “paper”despite them crowing about it “is” for the past 45 yrs. it’s only ever been a way to sell print advertising. A tabloid rag that aims low.

Won’t be missed.
