A question of moral superiority?

TheNiteHwk said:
No skin off my nose. I don't work for The Sun. I do sell adult ads for another publication. I use to check the adult ads in The Sun for leads. I have since found better lead sources. One day I just added them up out of curiosity. At the end of the day though I don’t really give a shit what other publications are doing. It matters not to me and does not affect my bottom line. I posted just as a note of interest... not to cry about it.
I was not addressing your bottom line; but rather your moral condemnation of the Sun as a publication which you agree to be a shameful rag in part because its revenues are substantially aided by its revenue from adult classifieds.

As someone who admits that his economic enterprise is in this context, the moral disapprobation simply struck me as ironic. Of course you were not wailing about your bottom line; but you certainly appeared -to me at least- to be wailing about the shamefullness of the Sun's bottom line.

In fact, all the major newspapers are rooted in and conditioned by some sort of committment to those aspects of their publications which -as a prominant publisher of a major Toronto newspaper once said-"make the cash registers ring".

Whether it is adult classifieds or big business or "Honest Ed's" doesn't really have much bearing on their collective integrity as distinct from one another.

I used to think the sun was bad. Then i spent 6 months in the UK. Holy crap. Not to be an elitist or anything, but what passes as news there is fckn scary. Most of the sun like papers make the national enquirer look like serious political analysis. Most of the stories are from the reality programs on the telly the night before. The papers all have obvious political bias, and couldn't care if what they are printing is true. In contrast are the broadsheets (eg TImes, Guardian) which are fantastic papers which also have obvious political bias. The only problem is that if you read these you are in an elitist minority. The Toronto sun actually has news in it. Sure most of the language is at a grade 8 level or less, and there political leanings are obvious (= thieving liberals bad). And they have (covered) boobies. and the sports section weighs more than all of the "news" put together. It still is a far sight more intellectual than what 90% of joe blow reads in the UK!

Y'all should try pissing / shtting in the toilet. Hence you could get rid of the sticky newspaper washroom floor covering. Sounds like a birdcage to me.

I have not bought any newspapers at all in years. I get them all for free at my office. For me and over 1/2 the office staff here all of them are really only good for washroom floor coverings. Cause that is almost always where they ALL end up.

The Sun I noticed though is often 'stuck' right to the floor. Must be something they put in the ink.

I like the Suns sports section but I hate how they like to focus on sex/crimes and both at the same time if possible.

I prefer the Star it's a nice intermediate amongst the various papers.

But I do like the Asimov Quiz in the Sun and the crossword is actually pretty challenging. Tougher than the Star which is easy but satisfying.

I only pick up the globe when I'm really bored and I want a challenging weekend crossword.

Not a fan of cryptics or sudoku (sorry VBB).

The Sun is for fun. Not to be taken seriously. I like that they have the New York Times crossword as well as their own.

I think maybe my point was misunderstood...

Actually I tip my hat to The Sun for their resourcefulness in taping the adult industry as a revenue source. If they paid their adult classifieds people by commission I might even go and work there. I could possibly sell well over a million a year there given their rates and the fact they are a daily. When I agreed that the term rag does describe The Sun to me I was referring to their tabloid style of reporting. When I made reference to the income they make off the adult industry really what I was saying is yah we can all sit here and call the paper a rag, knock them down etc… but check them out, look at all the money they are making. They must be doing something right. To me there is nothing shameful about making money in the adult industry. If there were I would not be working in this biz. In fact I am an outspoken advocate for the adult industry. Not because that’s how I make a living, because I do believe that there is a place for this biz in our society. Sadly though we do suffer that stigma of being called dirty because we make our living that way. If anything though I don’t think we should be bowing our heads in shame because we are in this biz. In fact I believe it’s good that we hold our heads high and yah maybe we should point out to the general public how much revenue is generated by this biz. We should tell them… yah you sit there and call my money dirty money… but do you know how many houses, condos, cars, vacations, clothes, etc, etc… were bought last year with all that so called dirty money? I would say to some; do you know that year to date so far this year I have paid over $6Grand in federal taxes? And I’m just one single guy… imagine how many others have paid as much and more. If anybody IMO should be ashamed it’s all those people that sell us all the goods and services that we buy. They sit there and call our money dirty… but watch how quickly they hold out their hands when we want to spend some. Shame on them. IMO there is no shame on those of us who believe in this industry and ourselves and choose to make our living in this biz. No shame on us at all.

No shit. I was watching a joint press conference with Brit PM Toni Blair and US President George Bush last night. They were alternating US Press Question, British Press Question. Watching the Brit press was like watching Jerry Springer every question started with an obvious Dis to the PM. Very Childish.

Good for you. You clarify your position quite nicely.
