Toronto police sergeant charged with assault in incident that sent man to hospital
Sgt. Robert Goudie also charged with failure to provide the necessaries of life over Halloween incident

A Toronto police sergeant is facing charges following a Halloween incident in a parking lot that sent a man to hospital.

A Toronto police sergeant is facing two charges, including assault, in connection with an altercation in a Scarborough parking lot last Halloween that sent a man to hospital.

The incident occurred around 4 a.m., after a man drove into a parking lot at 10 Gordonridge Place, near Danforth Road and Midland Avenue, according to a statement issued Thursday by Ontario's Special Investigations Unit.

A police cruiser drove into the lot a short time later, stopped behind the man's vehicle and "there was an interaction between a police officer and the man," the statement went on.

The officer left the scene.

"Sometime later, paramedics attended the area and took the man to Scarborough General Hospital," the statement said.

Following an investigation, the SIU determined that the sergeant should face two charges in connection with the incident.

Sgt. Robert Goudie has been charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm and one count of failure to provide the necessaries of life.

He will appear in court on Feb. 23.

The SIU would not comment further on the incident or charges.

However, a Toronto police communications officer confirmed Thursday evening that Goudie has been suspended with pay until the case is resolved in court.

The SIU is called in to investigate incidents involving police that involve death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Do they get the same rate of pay as their salary while suspended?
McCormick will no doubt defend this guy in the media and the union will pay his legal fees.

Answer to question #1. Yes, they do. That is not a function of the police union or the City of Toronto. It is a function of the Police Services Act, a provincial legislation. If you don't like it, talk to Kathleen. Bitching at the cops is just wasting your breath. The union will pay his legal fees. Yes, they will. He pays his dues, and part of that contract is that any litigation that comes out of allegations from on duty activities is paid for by the union. So what is your point?

It should at least be possible to assign him to parking enforcement or something so that he isn't just sitting at home collecting money.

It is very possible. If you recall, Forcillo was assigned to administrative duties after the shooting. For whatever reason, at the moment, the Chief has suspended him. He can rescind that at any time.

Just asking questions, no need to be a prick.

Make him clean the toilets at all the police stations.

I don't think he should be punished necessarily, not until the question of his guilt is established, and I think it is right that they have taken away his gun and badge in the meanwhile (I hope they have).

But I also think he shouldn't be REWARDED which is basically what suspended with pay is, a free paid vacation.

He should be assigned some sort of work to do that keeps him away from the public.

I'm not a fan of unions and all the crap they do, but until proven guilty he should still be paid.

I get it. It looks like he's probably guilty, but if you or me were arrested and charged for something, things should continue as normal until proven a crook.

I think he should be treated like the average person when charged with a crime -- Pay for their own lawyer -- not paid for time off for lawyer meetings, court appearances

He does pay for his own lawyer, through his union, to whom he pays dues. Its like your insurance company paying to have your car fixed after you slid on the ice and smacked a barrier. It is part of the agreement in becoming part of the union. If the alleged offence happened off duty (i.e. he assaulted someone on a day off while out shopping), the union won't provide a lawyer.
