this is great news for TO and Canadian soccer in general, its about time we get a real professional team with the disasters of the past in the NASL and the CSL etc etc, look at what the MLS program has done for the US soccer program, made it into actually a respectable side.

Never the safest place
Lynx are in something called USL, supposedly a level below Major League Soccer.

Why is Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment getting into soccer? It's never been anything but a money loser in Toronto. They'll be lucky if they draw crowds larger than the two or three thousand who show up for the Marlies. The new Exhibition Stadium they convinced all three levels of government to help fund will hold 20,000 people.

love 4 it 2 actually work, but i wont-the ethnics that MLSEL are hoping 4 to buy tix-italians/portugese dont care about this country or the sports in this country--thy will only show up if the price is cheap which it wont be bc we are talking about MLSEL & the only games they will go 2 our games against their home country clubs-eg.benfica/juventus-those stiff clubs from wimps leagues
june is the start of hell month hell-traffic chaos bc a team from who cares beats another team from who cares with no talent
you all live in canada now-respect your NEW home-go 2 jay game or argos-show pride in your city, wear toronto gear
keep your flags at home-wave the maple leaf

I beg to differ. If the marketing for this franchise is done right this could potentially be a gold mine. Toronto is made up of foreigners that love soccer. It wouldn't be too hard to fill a 20,000 person field. Again, it is all in the marketing...

the only way this will work is through massive amounts of publicity
similiar to what the maple leafs and the raptors have received. In order
for people to come to this sport you are going to need some type of
brand recognition and media exposure..forget the fact that you actually
will have to pay the players more then 100 bucks a week a play. The sport
requires something that most north american corportations can not give..and that is time and money for development. Forget the big stadiums and all the other hoopla and give the public something to actually see. bring in the junior
world cup players and the english premier teams and lets get this thing going.

So how much do you guys think would be a reasonable ticket price for a game? BTW, when does the season start?

You can get season seats to the argos, for couple hundred. Cheapest raps seats are 10-20 bucks a game. I dont think i would pay any more than that to see this soccer team. Esp at the beginning of the franchise, i dont think there mite be too many ppl interested, but if they are good and with good marketing, i think it could be a good franchise in toronto.

Anything over 10 bucks and the franchise dies. When you think the stadium
costs are 5-8 grand and hour. 1 buck a ticket more than breaks even with a full house. So 800 people by 10 bucks will break even. Anything above that
and the franchise becomes a valuable asset. If you ask any more for a ticket
you chance dumping millions in investment. Best to start low and hope like hell it takes off. If it does then slowly increase the ticket sales in porportion
to the draw.

$10 a ticket? Are you nuts? There is no way that is viable. Do you have a basis for your rationale?

If anyone is curious, I checked out some ticket prices at:

http://www.mlsnet.com/MLS/mls/tickets/

I checked out tickets for Chicago. They range from $20-$45 USD which is pretty reasonable. Chivas USA ranges from $15-$100 USD.

On that link too curiously enough, you can already reserve a ticket for the Toronto team for $50.

If it's cheaper I'd go more often. $10-$15 / game and I'd go approximately 5 times a year. If it's $30 to $40, well that already cuts into "other" budgets if you get my drift. :p

No but seriously I'd go at least twice just to see how the atmosphere is and if I feel anything for the team when I'm there. So I guess $10-$50 is reasonable to me. Anything above that and you can forget about it.

Checking around the sites for MLS teams, season ticket packages (20 games) range from ~$180 - ~$600 US, i.e. $9 - $30 a game. All the teams have the same salary cap so the Toronto tickets shouldn't be much different (unless the loonie tanks again).

I know it seems crazy but if you really want to make this a viable thing, you have to price tickets so the masses can come to see the event. If toronto
really wants to have any chance of turning this into a successful venture
you have to start the tickets at around the ten dollar level. That does not
mean you are going to be 10-15 rows up on the half way line, that means you will be able to see the game period. Hopefully the powers that be
have the foresight to investigate this before they gamble with the future
of soccer in canada again.

In order for this venture to succeed, MLSEL must connect with football fans across the GTA. They have to promote in places like Skallywags, The Main Event, The Mini Cafe... With The World Cup around the corner, they have the perfect opportunity to do this.

I want to be positive about this, it could be the right step in developing a stronger National Team. If Australia can reach The World Cup with a team comprised of non-English players, why can't Canada?

the way they can market this I figure is to go after families, convince the moms and dads to take their kids at what seem to be reasonable prices at other MLS cities, and you get the hooked for life as the kids grow up and could take their own children. Will they go after the ethnic soccer crazed communities in Toronto, probably, it has had some success in LA and the Chivas franchise in California, but the family angle works, you take for example in Scottish football where a team like Celtic or Rangers not only has the testosterone crowd but everyone in the family including grandma is nuts about the team, this could take a long time but its certainly viable,

and I wish the people who hate soccer dont bother saying this will fail because its not EPL or Serie A, you hate soccer at any level and being a soccer nut myself I will definitely support it.
