IV, I just watched the Tom Petty documentary on Netflix a few weeks ago (which shows I have a least more than a passing interest in his music). I thought the most fascinating part is how they had to continue to prove themselves, despite demonstrated success, over and over to their record company. With his sales, you would have thought he would have had more support.

I was liking Tom a lot on a personal level as well, right up to the end of the documentary, when unfortunately he does the cliché "trade in the old wife for the much younger (gold digger) chick" thing. I thought he was a different kind of rock star right up to then. I did admire how tough he was in business, and what a good band "manager" he was. Reminded me a little of Mick Jagger in that respect.

Nevertheless, it takes a special kind of talent to take very familiar pop/blues music progressions and persuade a new generation of fans that it's something they've never heard before. He was/is a master at that particular feat.

As result, I'd never change the station when a Tom Petty song came on, but at the other end of the spectrum, it's not music I feel I need to listen to anymore. Not trying to break up the party, just continuing the conversation we started with Black Sabbath.

When Tom Petty first broke, I didn't buy into his sound, he sounded like a Floridan Bruce Springsteen to me. The turnaround came with Southern Accents and the song Don't Come round here No More, he stripped down his sound while expanding his range at the same time. So I must ask: did Dave Stewart produce The Willburys?

Roy Orbison still gives me chills when he sings.

Produced by Jeff Lynne who was one of the Wilburys. He also did Petty's great Into the Great Wide Open, Full Moon Fever and Highway Companion albums.

Tom is the best"

.....and how can anyone who hears "American Girl" not think of the abduction scene in Silence of the Lambs! That was a perfect song for that moment.......

Video really highlights Prince but Tom is in this video too. Stick around or fast forward to the guitar solo. You're welcome.
Ahh someone beat me to it. That moment is magic. Prince was amazing, but Petty really did a good job of keeping the rest at a good pace and knew when to just let Prince go off.

TP has so many incredible songs and videos. I can't say I have a favourite, but this is in my top 10.

You don't know what it's like is my favorite Petty song, he's at his sardonic best on that song. Btw the supposed transgender is an actual woman. Her name is Raven Snow and is a lounge singer. The video wouldn't have been as good without her.

Jeff Lynne is responsible for the most depressing song of all time - just my op since I had my heart broken for the first time when the song came out. Being young and stooooopid it took me awhile to learn my lesson.

Totally with you on Jeff Lynne and ELO. Excellent!
