IV, I just watched the Tom Petty documentary on Netflix a few weeks ago (which shows I have a least more than a passing interest in his music). I thought the most fascinating part is how they had to continue to prove themselves, despite demonstrated success, over and over to their record company. With his sales, you would have thought he would have had more support.
I was liking Tom a lot on a personal level as well, right up to the end of the documentary, when unfortunately he does the cliché "trade in the old wife for the much younger (gold digger) chick" thing. I thought he was a different kind of rock star right up to then. I did admire how tough he was in business, and what a good band "manager" he was. Reminded me a little of Mick Jagger in that respect.
Nevertheless, it takes a special kind of talent to take very familiar pop/blues music progressions and persuade a new generation of fans that it's something they've never heard before. He was/is a master at that particular feat.
As result, I'd never change the station when a Tom Petty song came on, but at the other end of the spectrum, it's not music I feel I need to listen to anymore. Not trying to break up the party, just continuing the conversation we started with Black Sabbath.
