Not to lessen the severity of this incident, because it was a cheap, cheap move by Bertuzzi, and a horrifying result, but I can probably think of a handful of cheaper ones right off the top of my head ...
* Eddie Shore on Ace Bailey - Bailey never played again
* Marty McSorley with the stick swinging on Donald Brashear
* Claude Lemieux's hit from behind on Kris Draper
Even Domi's elbow on Scott Neidermeyer was cheaper. I think the difference, other than in the Ace Bailey situation, is the severity of the resulting injury. The sucker punch was ugly enough - it's the broken neck that will make this a huge deal.
Personal opinion, Bertuzzi should be out for as long as Moore is unable to play, to a maximum of a year. And hey, while we're at it, let's give Moore the salary that Bertuzzi will be giving up during the suspension too. In reality, I'd expect he'll be gone for the rest of the regular season and the first round of the playoffs.
And speaking of retribution, aside from Bertuzzi watching his back next time they play Colorado, he should watch his ass in his own dressing room. There's sticking up for a teammate, and then there's just being stupid. Power forward, tough guy, whatever ... when you're among the league-leading scorers, don't care how frustrated you are, there are more appropriate guys to be going for payback.
