I believe in tipping under two circumstances -
1. to insure good service - ie - will always tip a maitre'd in a good restaurant to insure I get the best table and the waiter knows he is going to get a good tip - and if I get good service he gets a good tip - if service sucks - I tell the maitre'd and the waiter gets SFA.
2. when I have gotten good service - doesn't matter if it is the guy that is changing my tire, or the girls that haul my ashes - if they take care of me I take care of them. I am usually remembered as the best tipper or "the prick that stiffed me". I will never be embarrassed into tipping. I spent many years on the other side of the bar and learned how to earn a tip and how to be appreciative of a good tipper.

As far as taxi drivers - most of them don't deserve shit. They are dirty, their cars are dirty, they give no service, they are discourteous to other drivers. In many cases they will let you off on the wrong side of the street, not know where they are going or know where they are going and think that you do not. I cab it often in downtown Toronto and have for years. I remember the time that drivers owned their cabs, opened doors, put suitcases in truncks and kept their cabs clean and in good shape. I don't want to hear the crying about how hard it is to drive cab - most of these guys sit on their asses all day on their cells and do nothing. On the other side of the coin I will always tip an airline limo driver - they are clean, their cars are clean, professional and provide service including lugging heavy suitcases and opening doors - the hack drivers should take a lesson!!!!
