why not use a radar detector
I could do that, but they don't always work on photo radar.

Also to buy a radar detector that's undetectable for Canadian police you need to spend at least 700 to $800 USD. In order to recoup that amount, you would need to get at least 10 to 15 speeding tickets. And if you get caught with one, its demerit points plus your insurance finds out about it, and starts jacking up your insurance rates.

Another problem with radar detectors is they're hard to hide on your dashboard.

I did a cost/benefit assessment and I came to the conclusion they're not worth it

First, my tint is stock, and nothing crazy, on my "not the biggest" current vehicle. I'd have more sympathy for being more strict about tints if headlights hadn't become eye searing, blue tinged, laser cannons. With after market add-ons being even worse. My last vehicle had no tint, and no auto dimming mirror... Never again.
Wasn't directed at you.

Guessing Phil is primarily looking at those wonderful pole-mounted speed cameras.

Radar detectors, from my limited knowledge, only work when a radar signal is broadcast towards it.

Photo cameras, like 407 cameras, are rear plate focused
I'm not 100% sure, but some can pick up a photo radar signal if it bounces off a building and then returns the other way towards your car.
But by that time it's a lot weaker so it doesn't always pick it up.

At least that's what I was told, I'm not sure if that's true

Timing and angle is key… has to be perfect!! Probably too late by the time it registers… IF it registers.

If it were me, I’d try to find the curtain gadget.

Love this car channel… this episode, they test a whole pile of plate blockers.

If you get pulled over with the Leaf Mate, stop your car, release the leaf, and then reverse your car 6 feet to cover the fallen leaf so the cop wont spot it 💡

I was stopped once. The cop argued that he couldn't see the front plate clear enough. When I suggested to him that was likely because of the sun glare he wasn't pleased. Issued me a ticket for that as well as speeding 53 in a 40 zone. What a dick!

How unlucky… sometimes cops are just assholes lol

One day I was coming home from work and I got caught going 80 in a 60 and was so lucky he just let me get away with a warning and no ticket 😀

There are benefits of being a young attractive woman and this is one of them. I think in my case, what pissed the guy off is that I embarrassed him by providing a perfect explanation as to why he couldn't read the plate. Because even with my plate covers you can clearly read the plate number. I was more pissed about the 53 in a 40 zone so I challenged that in court and they threw it out.

Which is why I'm always wary of darkly tinted plate covers, or clear covers that have degraded and look foggy, burnt out headlights, or tints that are bubbling, etc. Or anything more clever.

If a cop really wants to pull you over they can usually drum up a reason, but you don't have to make it easy. That initial pull over is Step 1 in POSSIBLY having a bad day. So maintain your shit, and don't be too clever.

Like I said earlier: use Waze in your phone/ Car Play / Android Auto. It does well for reporting cameras and other road issues, and somewhat well for reporting police. Even if you don't have a route programed Waze will give you a warning about cameras, which is nice.

Anything else is too clever, IMO.

My car's GPS gives me a warning of all the speed and traffic light cameras in the city.

Nice. As long as it does a good job it doesn't really matter what you use. (I'm not getting a commission from Waze / Google or anything. ;) )

Does anyone know where I can buy very dark tinted license plate covers??
They have to be dark enough so photo radar cant take a photo of the license plate number.

Asking for a friend
I doubt its legal and if they stop you, you're going to get it.

But whats worse, getting 2 to 3 $85 tickets every year (which is what I'm currently averaging), or one $115 ticket for illegal license plate cover??

And I see lots of other cars with tinted license plate covers, so it doesnt look like cops are enforcing this very much
i literally just got tickets for theplate covers this week. They fucking pulled me over just for that. It‘s illegal. Some cops enforce it some don’t. Up to you, but it’s not worth the hassle, the possible attention from the police And most importantly the $$$.

Side note - I was actually going to use that same fine money to finally see an SP in this thread Lol. Now I gotta wait 👎🏾

You cannot even have the advertising plastic boarder around your plate that a lot of dealers like to put on when you buy your car from them. I got stopped for that a couple years ago by a cop at Markham Road and Milner Avenue in Scarborough. He let me go but said to take it off when I get home.

Point number 1:

Good God, I would estimate 25% of cars are quite happy having those free advertising abominations on their cars.

I bought a car once and wrote on the sales agreement, "No dealer stickers, license covers, or other promotional items allowed on or in this vehicle"

He asked why.

I said, are you willing to give me free advertising in your dealership?? Maybe a sign on top of the entrance advertising my business?

He said , sheepishly, no.

Then I said, neither do I.

Seriously, you have a nice car, and you have this plastic framed thing with "Bobby Joes Quality Used Cars" on the frame?

Point number two -

Why , oh why would someone with a nice Audi, Lexus, whatever, any decent car, want to keep a worn out , peeling license plate? I am assuming it is not a vanity plate.

It makes a beautiful car look AWFUL.
