Holy fuck, that's the first time I've seen the whole video. That second large blast was incredible. Like a bomb went off.

The viewers went from thinking they're seeing a cool display to hoping someone's not hurt to shitting their pants.

I heard on the news last night that it was 21 tons of TNT that exploded.

That's about 0.021 kilotons.

The atomic bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were 15 kilotons and 21 kilotons, respectively. So it gives you an idea of how much more powerful those explosions were, and those are regarded as low yield nuclear warheads.

Also, the Halifax Explosion of December 1917 was bigger than this Chinese one, which was measured at 2.90 kilotons. 2,000 people died. Many more injured.

Let's just hope that the Chinese safety standards for their nuclear warheads are better.

Reason for second explosion was probably the Oxirane stored on site.
Used to produce other small things (soaps, detergents, many other things).
But also the main component of a thermo blast.
100 kgs of the stuff can make a full size sudan car disappear.
That's way the second blast's plume was sort of like a nuclear bomb.
Not a mushroom cloud as big, but rises and dsipears the same way.

I'm really rooting for China on the grand scheme of things. Tremendous modernization , lifting millions out of poverty , opening up country to foreigners and tourism and letting there own people come and go as they please. Seems like the leadership r really trying to improve the lot of the people while at the same time being terrified of losing control and having their country splinter along ethnic lines.
But when I see shit like this I think the leaders of China r gonna have to get rid of their dictatorial corrupt government in favour of a more representative and accountable government. I think they've gone as far as they can with dictatorship.

Is this worse than those railcars that blew up in Quebec?
The Lac-Megantic rail car disaster in Quebec involved the release of 6,000,000 litres of crude oil. Close to 50 people died. Some of the missing may have vaporized from the fiery explosions. I couldn't find anything that specified the explosive yield, but it didn't involve military grade high explosives.

Same for the Mississauga Train Disaster (no yield but no deaths). That explosion caused a fireball that rose 1,500 METERS into the air. (I remember that one as I felt the tremor while IN a car travelling to an arena to play shinny ice hockey. Saw the sky light up from Etobicoke.)

I don't think we've ever seen a country modernize as quickly as China has over the last few decades. It is amazing what they've done. Sadly, there is a lot to be done on the human rights front.

Also the Sunrise Propane explosion in Downsview in 2008. 2 died from that one: a Sunrise employee and a fire-fighter. I think they are still investigating the exact cause, but it's likely from an illegal truck to truck transfer of propane.

Yes, but Sunrise Propane explosion is smaller than all of these.
