I'll be leaving vaughn, planning on taking the 427 to the 401 and heading east to shwa. Will I hit traffic or too early, too cheap to take 407.

You'll definitely hit traffic during that time, but check Google Maps for real time traffic. Another possibility is to take Highway 7 across the top of the city past Vaughan and Richmond Hill. That route is a little bit better, but there's a slow spot near Highway 7 and 400 because of subway construction. Then it slows down again in the Highway 7 and Leslie area. Then you can come back south on 404 to the 401 East.

Hwy 7 from Jane to Centre St is a nightmare, if you take you'll be stuck like glue.

The only semi-reasonable route is Teston Rd, even if it's out of your way. That's the route I take when I go to Richmond Hill.

While you stew sitting in traffic, just think of all the money you are saving.

And then, at 5:30 to 6:30,you'll hit 3 more traffic jams, Pickering to Ajax, Ajax to Whitby and Whitby to Oshawa.

I would take 407, all the way to thickson or Simcoe, cost 30 bucks but save yourself 1-1/2 to 2 hours.

If you put any value at all on your time, take the 407.
Use what you save on gas towards your 407 bill.

The good news is that if you don't take the 407, you are very unlikely to get a speeding ticket.

Or you could go for a massage in Vaughan and wait until the traffic gets quiet.

How did saving that $8 work out for you? For the price of a Big Mac meal, you could have been there in a regular amount if time.

Install Waze on your smart phone. It will give you the best route at the time you leave. But at that time you are going to hit major traffic on the 409E/401E all the way until the DVP. It then opens up through Scarborough and you will hit traffic going through Pickering to Whitby. I'd say you'd be luck to hit Oshawa by 6PM.

I think OP took one too many backroads.
Think I saw him posting on Merb so he may be in Montreal.:)
Despite the number of Traffic lights I find during rush hour secondary roads are not bad.
Eglinton for instance before the LRT construction.
If I were OP I'd have probably tried Rutherford across to McCowan then down McCowan and take the 407 from there.
