The only thing I remember from automotive class was how to remove a radiator and do an oil change but that being said cars still need brakes, tires, batteries and oil to be changed.
I wish we had an automotive class back when I was in school. Now that I think about it not many HS offered it in the GTA

In my opinion almost anything can be learned online. There are thousands on videos, websites books that can teach us the basics especially on things that have been mentioned in this thread. Everyone has the ability to learn it just comes down to putting in the work and effort.

My parents were poor, immigrant single mother on welfare. Everything from finance, cooking and small home/car repairs I learned to do myself from a little bit of research.

In today's society and culture I'm not depending on teachers and the school system to teach my kids anything. They will push their own agendas on your children. No thanks. Times are changing.

Sad thing is I DID have shop class in my school. But I wasn't allowed to take it because I was in the "advanced" track. That was for the "basic" kids. But I love cars. I've built my own cars over the years. I loved them in HS. I WISH I could have taken those classes. In fact I've lobbied for a mix of students in all things. Academics can help with school. Shop kids can help with the mechanics of it all. Everyone mixes and learn from each other. One becomes an engineer. One makes precision parts on a lathe.

Like an F1 team! I missed my calling... (sigh) fucking guidance counsellors were useless back in the day! </rant>

All good answers re. finance, cooking, and hands on skills. I loved cooking and shop class in my day.

Media literacy is a necessity these days for both kids and adults. Some schools are adding programs on how to spot fake BS online and to be aware of disinformation.

What’s also missing from many schools now is what the Americans used to call Civics class. For us it was part of the Social Studies curriculum. So many kids have no idea how a democratic society functions, its no wonder voter participation keeps dropping. When so many learn things from TikTok influencers and completely disengage from current affairs and politics, wannabe fascists like Trump get into power.

I think these three things are important.
how to cook
how to do laundry
how to take care of your finances, how to invest, save money and how the stock market works.

thoughts ????
We had to do all of these. One of my teachers at 16 said we would soon be filling in tax returns (no computers back then) and we should know how to protect ourselves from missing out on our money. Did about 12 returns for homework assignments.....

Only finance is important. Once they understand how it works and that spending too much is not a good idea, they will also understand that cooking is cheaper than eating out, so they will learn cooking on their own fast

I believe the European school system should be looked at in a serious way.

Start streaming kids according to intelligence, aptitude, skills and interest at age 14-16.
Advanced academics for those going to University
Trade school prep for those interested in trades
Military training for those interested in joining the armed forces
Advanced music for those who exhibit talent and musical aptitude

Basic Life Sciences for those who show no interest in the above or come up short on academics.

Those students get trained in basic healthcare and first aid, personal health and hygiene, shops classes, personal finance , cooking
Life skills like fishing, farming camping, environmental stewardship.

Make school interesting and play to a students strengths
