Not sure why the government wants to jam down sex ed related topics to kids at such an early age. Sounds a little to early for me. Kids in grade 1-3 can barely even write, read and do basic math. So to add in touchy feely topics like sex ed seems a little too over their head at that age.
'In grade one, children will be taught to identify body parts, including genitalia, using their correct terms (penis, testicles, vagina, vulva) and to recognize exploitative behaviours such as inappropriate touching. In grade two, the concept of "consent" will be introduced very broadly as the right to say "no" in threatening situations.'

I had hoped that sexual repression died with the Victorian age thinking that served your kids up to pedos through ignorance. They can learn the proper terms for eyes, ears and any body part that does not have the slightest concept of pleasure when they are adults. So a kid has to refer to his 'pee-pee' because his parents are repressed sexual paranoids ?

For all the "change is needed" fools who have no idea what curriculum is being changed:

Grade 1: Identify parts of the body and learning appropriate and inappropriate touch.
Grade 2: Distinguish similarities and differences between themselves and others.
Grade 3: Basic human and animal reproductive process, and basic physical changes from birth to childhood.
Grade 4: The stages of human development and identify the physical and emotional changes appropriate to childhood.
Grade 5: Puberty, the process of menstruation and sperm production.
Grade 6: The function of reproductive organs.

This is the 15 year old shit that is "out of date" and needs an overhaul (current PDF revised as of 2005)
http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum/elementary/health18curr.pdf

The ONLY new changes in current curriculum I can see is the gay rights mandates
Even back then they are discussing internet access (although obviously it is more prevalent today)

The more you post the more obvious you prove you don't have a fucking clue to use your own words
*Hint since you like googling old articles try looking up what happened Aug 2013 instead of an older link to May 2011

Oh and there are more boards than just TDSB (which could surprise you from your postings) many of which never flip flopped
I gotta be honest.. I have no idea what you're talking about. Children are allowed to use cellphones in schools. Further, I have NEVER heard of a single school "jamming" cell phone signals on school properties (let alone all out banning their use on school grounds).

Whether or not I have children is none of your business.. Nor does my having children or NOT having children make me an expert (or not an expert).

I'm more than willing to admit I'm mistaken if you can provide me some evidence to the contrary.

From a technical standpoint the picocells are only blocking the cell, just most people call it "jamming" since you can not use the service unless authorized
Lots of places do this (including 1 entire school board in GTA for sure)

I finally found what you're probably referring to...
http://www.wellandtribune.ca/2013/08/29/ontario-teachers-union-calls-for-classroom-cellphone-ban
You do understand that this refers to use IN CLASS which isn't something which we were debating at all. The debate was over how much access children will have (unadulterated) to graphic materials. We were debating whether or not little Jimmy is going to see shit on little Michael's cell phone.. You were pathetically attempting to say that this is impossible.. It is not impossible, it's quite possible and actually quite probable..

You seem to be fixated on the gay rights or "gay classes" issue. What exactly is it wrong with discussing these issues? There are an active and growing part of our society (hardly a niche group) so should they should be included in the discussion.

Here is what they were discussing in 1998 regarding internet access:

The Use of Computers in the Health and Physical Education Curriculum

This curriculum provides students with opportunities to use software programs, the Internet, e-mail, and audio and visual technology for a variety of purposes. For example, students can use technology to record food choices over a period of time, measure nutrient intake, maintain a fitness profile, evaluate an individual’s physical stages, monitor physical performance, and develop personal exercise programs. They can use the World Wide Web to access and research information on various health-and-fitness topics and issues.

Think for a moment about how people were using computers in 1998. If you were lucky enough to have a computer at school or home, you were dialing up using a 33.6 or slower modem often through a service like CompuServe and America Online that you installed with a floppy disk. The computers at the time were "state of the art" 486 or first gen Pentiums running Windows 95 or earlier. Web browsers were barely known in those days since Windows 95 didn't even ship with one initially.

Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, SMS, WorldStarHipHop and Terb did not exist. Nor did SMS, Skype or web cameras.

The people who developed the curriculum in 98 could not have foreseen how quickly technology has come along. Internet access is not just more prevalent today, it is universal and ubiquitous.

More to the point, it's not up for debate.. Until such time that the law is changed so that gay marriage (and/OR adoption of children by gay people/couples) is outlawed, then the schools are required to teach that these families are "normal" when discussing diversity amongst families.. The law says these people can wed. The law says that they can raise children.. Our schools shouldn't say any different..

You can argue that kids shouldn't be focusing on "acceptance" or "tolerance" of diversity in school. You can argue that they should only focus on reading, writing, science, and math.. But then you'd be a fucking moron because YOU TOO are a product of these (albeit old and outdated) lessons..

English as a second language?
Never once did I say parents needed to watch kids constantly

To the contrary I said kids are normally doing stuff with families + friends etc & I questioned where exactly these kids had the time (or space) to engage in sexual activities unless negligent parents abandoned their kids

Feel free to link whichever post you think you are discussing surveillance and I can dumb it down for you
Seems no need. Your post does it well enough.

And are you kidding me? Do you really think kids can't find time to do something naughty?

Just so you are aware, jamming a cell signal is illegal in both Canada and the US. What school board installs picocells? Only article I could find is a BC principal who was deemed to be in violation of the law.

Halton & Peel region both have em

But as I did clarify when other poster was confused, it does not fully block signal
You can still dial 911

This is getting pathetic.. TeeJay's argument has become "Kids across Ontario shouldn't have to learn about sex because they won't be able to find out about sex on their own while at school... So long as they live in Halton or Peel region.... And as long as their parents block all offensive material online.. And as long as they don't have any friends whose parents don't block offensive material online..."

Get a fucking brain buddy.

So why boycott school now? The new curriculum is not being taught until 2015-2016. Parents are just hurting their own kids at this point. I don't think they'll be reteaching what they missed.

This makes no sense. A jammed cell phone is useless because there's no signal at all. You can't selectively block numbers including 911 using a cell jammer; you block everything or nothing.

As far as I know, you can dial 911 on a phone that does not have a SIM card or one that isn't activated.

Something tells me that logic isn't really a concern for these numb nut parents.

Your arguments are completely unpersuasive.

The fact that the law does not outlaw a behaviour or a characteristic does not make it "normal". As I'm sure you well know, "normal" and "legal" have two different definitions.

Further, the schools have no obligation to teach children about everything, legal or not. As teachers are fond of pointing out, teaching time is a scarce resource. The schools have a lot of room left to improve in teaching the material that everyone agrees they should be teaching. Perhaps they should focus on that before branching out into non-essential subjects. It seems lazy and unproductive to me that they'd rather teach about such fluff.

Also, what is it exactly the schools are trying to teach? Are they teaching the law? Are they educating students about the tolerance (also not the same as "normalization") that is required under the codes of conduct that all Boards have? Or are they trying to tell children what is "normal" or "right"? If it's the latter, why would schools be doing this? Don't we have a separation of church and state in this country?!

The problem with teaching about "what is right" in the secular sense iis that everyone thinks they are an expert on the topic, and therefore no one is! Schools do not carry any higher moral authority than parents or religious institutions when it comes to defining what is right. That's why the schools are wasting their time, and wasting the time of parents (and annoying them), whenever they venture into these topics.

It is all too common for people to conflate "tolerance" with "normalization" in these debates. Please stop. It should be enough for people to tolerate each other. It really isn't necessary for everything to be "normal" (thereby making the term devoid of meaning) or for everyone to "respect" differences that are at odds with their personal views and beliefs. It is enough for people to get through their lives without undue obstacles. It is ridiculous for anyone to demand that their personal beliefs or lifestyles be "respected" by others. If you like the headspace you live in, then just live your life and enjoy it already! Stop looking for external confirmation of your morality/"sense of normality"!

The "normal" thing is that these other children come from families which may include same sex partners.. It's "normal" because it's legally allowed and it happens (it's not an "abnormality")..

are they trying to tell children what is "normal" or "right"? If it's the latter, why would schools be doing this?
They're teaching children that these other types of sexual orientation exist and that it's fine.

Don't we have a separation of church and state in this country?!
What the fuck does this even mean? At what point is any church pushing forward this (supposedly) gay friendly agenda?

Schools do not carry any higher moral authority than parents or religious institutions when it comes to defining what is right.
Agreed. Which is why they're deferring to the law. The law says it's okay (legal) to be gay. The law says it's okay (legal) to be married and have a family if you're gay. As such, they're teaching children that they'd better tolerate these totally legal families (along with countless other types of totally legal families such as mixed race families, single parent families, Jewish, Muslim, etc.,.).. They're also teaching children that if they discover that they themselves are gay, that it's okay (legal) and that they can expect to have the exact same rights as every other child in their class.

Schools aren't determining anything. It is the government that is doing the defining and as such, yes they do have a higher authority.

And since teachings at school are regulated within the Charter of Rights while parents aren't, it seems pretty reasonable.

Most of the anti-sex-ed posts here mention that parents would have to be incompetent to fail at raising their children. Unfortunately there are a great many incompetent parents.
