I don't like smoking, but if you're an adult and you're dumb enough to do it, go right ahead. Just either pay for your medical costs yourself or, you know, don't get medical treatment.

The more dumb things that people can purposely choose to do, as long as it directly harms only themselves, the happier we'll all be. Keeps the species strong by letting the idiots kill themselves off.

+1 but I will add smoking should only be done in private residences. The worst is going to the beach and the sand is littered with cancer sticks.

I agree. Also, all who engage in risky activities should pay their own medical bills like speeding and other idiotic traffic violations, drinking, drugs, motorcycling, bicycling in traffic, skydiving, unhealthy diet, farming, mining, and ... prostitution. Did I miss anything?

To farming and mining, I would add;skyscraper construction workers, police, fire and rescue, oil patch drill hands, office building window washers, ...these are all non essentials eh?.. Just folks doing high risk shit for kicks

Employers should pay in those cases. Charge companies that put workers at risk a steep premium. Would probably make some of them invest in safer practices...

And invest in other countries rather than here.

A total ban would prohibit the odd indulgence of a Cohiba (I'm not a 'smoker' per se).

Smokers contribute over $7.3 billion in taxes annually to the federal and provincial coffers, directly from the purchase of cigarettes. Undoubtedly goes a long way to offset their healthcare costs.

I don't smoke myself but I understand the addiction to it of those who do.

My friend got lung cancer at a very young age, from smoking and still cannot stop. She has used all of the so called "aids," and gotten prescriptions from the doctor as well. She has three children and will be a grandmother one day so has everything to live for. Her friends are all disgusted with her but I keep supporting her in her quest to quit.

I was a smoker 20 some odd years ago and I remember the hell i went through to quit. It has been compared to worse than coming off of heroin. I know she can do it if I did it because I was a true and blue smoker. Inside of me I struggle with anger at her but on the surface I show her compassion.

She is a very bright woman so I don't get it.
They just removed the little bit of cancer she had as it was detected early and i was with her at the appointment when the doctor told her if she continued it would come back worse.

She quit when first diagnosed and went through a depression of self remorse and blaming herself for being so stupid but then, went right back on them. I am just not saying anything anymore and trying not to judge. I see her trying desperately and failing. I throw my hands up.

In my last profession, I had a client with acute emphysema who continued to smoke. It was really disgusting. His voice was filled with hacking and coughing up god knows what. It was impossible to have a conversation with him because of the coughing interruptions. He smelled terrible too from the tobacco and an oxygen machine followed him around.

I can only chalk it up to we are all different and some people just don't have the inner strength that other people do. Who am I to judge. I don't want to lose her but am afraid for her. She is one of my dearest friends.

Agree that there is no reason to smoke and it is horrible for your health regardless of be it cigarettes, cigars, pipes or chewing tobacco.

However, what do you mean by banned? I'll agree that there should be no smoking in restaurants, trains, aircraft or buses. But outright banning tobacco - no.

Agreed,...should be allowed to smoke in an enclosed environment only.

I will never forget a few years back walking through Heathrow air port,...and coming across a glass enclosed room right in the middle of the air port walkway,...shit,...you didn't have to even light up to get your fix in there.

But it did look kinda down grading,...sorta like specimens on display,...maybe that was the intent,...don't even know if its there any more.

Maybe it helped,...the brits seem to be cutting back,...but the French and to some degree Italians, still aren't giving up.
