Why are so many people mis-spelling "than" with "then"? It gets to be point of real annoyance to me. I mean I can understand if someone mis-spell a longer word like "disappointment" one p two p's who cares it still sounds right. But "Then" is completely different from "Than" and such frequently used words with simple spelling, yet still most common spelling errors. *sigh*

Same reason they use "Your" when "You're" is the correct spelling, or "there" when they should use "their"... the list goes on.......

Maybe because english is not a first language for a lot of posters.
I no longer believe that English is the first language of the English-speaking posters! Most people are just too lazy to take care in what they write. I work in the publishing industry and many of the manuscripts we receive are barely intelligible...!

The ones that kill me, and I have seen here often, is, advise and advice. I even noticed once on a professionally done sign at a business. It listed all their services and at the end it read, "Professional Advise"! Too funny, the owner must read it everyday and not have a clue.

Hmm....my fave has to be "loose" & "lose"....the best is when someone posts trying to rag on somebody saying "What a looser!"

You have to admire the purity of it...;)

biggest... annoyance... ever...
i work in health care, and you'd be surprised how many organization-wide and community documents go out with glaring grammar and spelling errors, from top-end executives WITH full-time executive assistants...

I sure hope you realize that they are both words and are used in different circumstances, thus not necessarily making it a spelling mistake.

Than is used when doing comparisons.

Then is used when you are talking about time.

I believe misusing would be a better choice of words, since my guess is the posters don't know the difference.

ie. I wanted to bang Asian Kelly at 8pm, but she wasn't available then, so I banged her roommate. I wish I could have done Kelly, rather than her roommate.

If only I could have come up with that example back when my grade 4 english teacher asked me to use them in a sentence!

Hmmm...all the good ones are taken, so I'll submit

farther and further
leery, wary, weary, (often used interchangeably)
affect, effect
adverse, averse
discreet, discrete
i.e. e.g.

....there's lots, but I admit the one that most annoys me has already been posted...it's lose vs loose. Unforgivable!

While it may have been clearly a typo in the case you mentioned, others who are more knowledgeable (and use old English) have used "advise" properly as a noun. See this: http://www.studyenglishgrammar.com/english-tips/the-homonym-riddle.htm

So your "advice" vs "advise" example is definitely not the same as "then" vs. "than"... No need to kill yourself over someone who may be using Shakespearean English.

Are you sure you didn't mean "so I bung her roommate."

A verbal annoyance is people that say fustrated instead of frustrated, this is very frustrating.

Also, when people say phrases like 'more hungrier' or 'more drunker', not sure what this is called, all I know is it's not right.
