The basic rules of American democracy provide a veto over national policy to a minority of the states.
But it's even worse than that. There are at least 4 checks and balances in the US governmental system and you can block legislation at any one of those points - The White House, the House of Representatives, the Senate (with its filibuster rule) and the Supreme Court, which is now overtly politicized and far right. You can block legislation by buying a few senators. Or by stacking the Supreme Court.
And the districts in each state are heavily gerrymandered to ensure that the party already in power can stay in power under almost any circumstances and the Supreme Court thought that was just fine. And you can massively contribute to any selected politician's campaign anonymously through a PAC and own his / her ass that way. And most of the senators appear to be idiots who stay in power by grifting and owning the state party apparatus and out-fundraising their competitors.
And the rich also own the media. It's all fucked.

They'll never fix the demographic issues with the senate or a few racist billionaires controlling all the media.
This does seem like the midterms and next election will decide whether they go the full autocrat/Hungary model or manage to save their democracy, but right now it looks like its all fucked.
But at least you can buy cheap guns everywhere.

Probably the biggest trick or successful tactic right-wing media has done is to demonize all other media that doesn't align with their agenda. They have told their audience not to trust "mainstream media" over and over for years. Now they have a completely captive and clueless audience, that only listens to right-wing media.
