The prostitution bill is a bizarre work of moral panic

Interesting column.
He's from the libertarian wing of the old Reform party, not a social conservative. Too bad he's still in hot water for his child porn comments from last year.

Good read.

All of the arguments against this Bill I've read have been damning. The problem, I don't know if any of it is going to matter.

Interesting. I wonder if it matters at this point too.

Flanagan makes some interesting connections with history regarding prohibition, gambling and the war on drugs.
Now that the ball is rolling downhill on the new law, I don't think that there is anything big enough in the way to stop it.

Just like drugs, prohibition and anti-gambling, the law is going to drive SPs back squarely into the hands of organized crime. SPs will be in more danger than they were before - just like they said they would be with this law. Will indy SPs be pressured by the mob to work for them - not inconceivable. Will all girls have to go indie if agencies disappear, not inconceivable either.

The danger level for clients will go up too as organized crime will make it more risky (and expensive) for the client.

Please don't label this as panic. I know this isn't a popular thing to say, but things are going to get worse in the hobby before they get better. Eventually it will recover but not overnight (just like it did for prohibition and gambling). To say nothing much will change and not prepare otherwise is foolish - Its going to be a war and there will be casualties.

I hope I'm wrong, but sorry, I don't see any white-knights riding immediately over the hill to save us either.
Some of us will go on, damn the torpedoes style, others will force themselves to the sidelines. Nothing wrong with either one.
Everyone of us will have to personally evaluate their own situation, determine if the risk is worth the rewards and carry on.

He was correct about the kiddie porn though.

It's a waste of money throwing consumers of kiddie porn in jail. Throw the makers and distributors of kiddie porn in jail (in fact shoot the makers and draw and quarter the parents who put their kids into kiddie porn for all I care)

But consumers, fine them 500 grand and put them on a sex registry.

Agreed. There may be some small changes, but it will pass and we will probably have to wait for the law to be proclaimed and then see what happens. I'll be looking to see if my favorite agencies are still operating about a month after the law is in force.

Guess I better start saving up for Germany.
