Here is one of my favorite models. I used 4 lights, 2 strip lights from each side of the background, a light with umbrella off to the camera left for fill light (only time I use Umbrellas for fill light) and a ring flash on my camera.
Don't get me wrong I used umbrellas for years when I first started, I had 1 strobe and 1 umbrella with 1 stand, it was all I really had but I learned to outgrow them. I discovered softboxes and octoboxes and I really like the light they produce over an umbrella. Not saying an umbrellas is bad, just stating my preference of tools I like to use. In fact I use umbrellas sometimes as fill light, just not as a key light source.Nice to see you agree with me on available light (window) light. You have to know how to use the tools effectively, if you can't handle an umbrella, you can't handle the other stuff.
So we shouldn't knock those people who enjoy what they do. If they enjoy snapping pics with their cell phones and it brings then joy, then great. None of them are hurting anyone. And if people think their work is amazing than great. Any self proclaimed pro-photographer who frowns upon them are nothing but insecure photography snobs who feel threatened because they spent $30K on pro gear. Then you have people equipped with nothing more than cell phones and no modifiers or lighting gear...............

So Telsa, why is that we haven't seen any of your work? If your going to give it (opinions and criticism) you should be able to take it. Something Jarmo preaches when learning from others.
Yes let's setup something for the new year.Oh this is my booty
Lets shoot again darling !
How wide are you looking to go? I'd check out Sigma stuff, price is in your ballpark and they are nice and sharp.Trying to get this thread back to its original intent. Im looking for a wide angle lens and could do with some recommendations
At the moment i have a tamron 24-70 2.8. Its a great lens fast enough in low ight and very sharp. Id like something equally as sharp.
Criteria
I have a 60d but would like to move to full frame one day so i would like it to be full frme compatible.
I really like the 2.8 but im a little flrxible there especially if someone can explain why you might notwant a 2.8 for a wide angle.
Id like to spend around $1000 but can go to $1500 for theright lens.
One huge and very important point is be very careful of stolen lenses. I had my lenses stolen and needed to file a report and submit my serial number to these crawler sites that look if a photo was ever taken with my stolen lens,. I think they look at the exif data, and somehow obtain the SN, then report it to the original owner and/or police. Maybe have them show you a proof of purchase. You don't want to be shooting with a stolen lens, then have cops knocking at your door.Another question is with regards to bying used lenses ... Especially off kijiji.
What shoud one look for ?
How do you test it?
What are typical problems
Thanks!
So far I haven't had any issues with lenses bought of Kijiji. However, look for obvious signs of damage and wear. Check that the af works if it has it. is the mf smooth or not? Bring your camera along so you can put it on and try it out, they should be willing to let you do that.Another question is with regards to bying used lenses ... Especially off kijiji.

That's one reason I don't shoot 1-on-1 with female models. I'll usually bring along my MUA or have her bring a friend and I always ask permission if I need to flick hair out of the way or reposition her.As for why I don't post my work on here, I'm not here to plug myself shamelessly without paying Fred for advertising fees.

With buying new lens, check to see if they AF properly. Turn your camera's AF mode to Servo (or similar on a Nikon etc) and see if the AF tracks accurately. Listen to hear if there are unusual noises like gears grinding etc.. Check and see if there is a filter on the threads. If so, remove it check the lens threads for damage or dings. Switch the lens to Manual and see if you can work the focus ring. If it is an L lens with weather sealing, check to see that the seals isn't chewed up/torn. Stop the lens down to the smallest and if you have a DOP button on your camera, verify that the aperature blades are working properly.Another question is with regards to bying used lenses ... Also take into account vignetting. fredmiranda.com i find is your best resource for researching reviews of photography gear. How wide are you looking to go? I'd check out Sigma stuff, price is in your ballpark and they are nice and sharp.
A fast lens is always great, useful for lower light and isolating subjects but not all lenses are that sharp wide open. Do your research, read reviews and go in to the store to try it in hand.
Also, remember that whatever lens you buy, it won't be as wide on your 60D as it will be on a full frame, so take that in to account.
i recommend getting the first 5D for full frame if your on a budget, can be found used on craigslist or kijiji. Semi-pro full frame I recommend 6D. If you have a bit more cash get the new 5Dmk3. If your very into photography get the 1D series cameras that cost about $6-8K.Trying to get this thread back to its original intent.
