I've been using the Samsung Galaxy S phones since the S3 and currently use the S7. They've been great phones. Never had overheating issues. Batteries keep improving actually though I miss the replacable battery feature which ended with the S6. BTW, the recall is specifically for the Note 7, not the S phones.

I have had my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge since March, no issues. This is the first I am hearing about any potential problems and I have not received a recall notice.

And you won't because the problem is with the Note 7 only. Samsung said that it would permanently cease production and sales of the device and may even cancel the release of the Note 8 scheduled for next year. This is a big problem for them.

My choice for a new phone was down to the Galaxy Note 7 or iPhone 7 Plus. I guess Samsung just made the decision for me.
