I was reluctantly okay with the deal when Seguin was just good. Now that he's a star and Hamilton looks to be a star, it's a disaster.

You don't trade unprotected picks when you suck. Burke was too damn proud or too buddy buddy with Chiarelli so no surprise the 2010 1st turned into 2nd overall.

And by the way, the 2016 1st from Pittsburgh is lottery protected.

In only defense to Burke cause we don't know ... Maybe the Bruins would not allow the picks to be protected ? Heck if I am going to give up on a 21 year old player then I would want a non protected draft pick ...

Saying that ... When Burke took over the Leaf's prospect list was pathetic and the organization was in no position to trade multiple picks for one player and the fact that Cliff traded picks ( in his brief stint as GM ) to go down in the draft to
pick Schen and also traded a pic to Blues forward Jamal Mayers , a draft pic for Mikhail Grabovski and also traded away young players Carlo Colaiacovo and Alexander Steen ( and got no draft pics in return ) ...

Holly Ship no wonder this franchise is in such a mess ... It took more then a decade for LEAFS to find out that in a Cap world draft pics are like gold ...

I'm just glad that they're cleaning house.

I think Phaneuf should go too.

Maurice, when will Lord Stanley return to it's RIGHTFUL home here in Toronto? :p

McDavid had his first practice with his Oiler teammates yesterday and told the media afterwards he envisions himself staying in an Oiler uniform his entire career. Too bad for Toronto.
Well at least until he is 26. ( I think that is the earliest age he can become a UFA, but Pleae correct me) Even if he does possibly want to come to the Leafs it's nothing you can plan or build for since its at least 7 years away.

1. Don't shoot the messenger. A TSN analyst said that Babcock wanted him out before he started.. It was on the trade show yesterday. But hey you know somebody who is probably a low level desk worker at MLSE and think he knows it all.

2. Since your comparing points of Kessel as 22 years old vs that of an 18 year old lets do the same moving forward. I wonder who will score more points next year. seguin and Hamilton or spaling, kapanen and Harrington. I wonder?

Ask people around the NHL and they would all say Seguin was better in 2015, almost all would say he was better in 2014, the majority would say he was better in 2012. Kessel was better in a short season in 2013, and better when Seguin was an year old rookie.

The points are now advantage Seguin and he has more of complete game, plus he was better 3 of the past 5 seasons.

And we have not even considered the other part, Dougie Hamilton, who ia a good D already and potentially an all star. And moving forward the gap is even wider.

Wow!!! Anybody, and I mean anybody, would agree that Seguin had a better year than kessel in 2015....yahoo your right congrats you should be the next GM of the leafs.
If you would read all my response, I said that I knew somebody close to Babcock not TSN, I didn't know you work at TSN and no I don't know you.
Have you been doing drugs Captain Obvious? I mean you seem to have a great talent to point out the obvious so you think your making a point!
Again WOW!!!!! As for me, a true leaf fan, who cares, ( I mean if your not keeping score on how many times your right) if leafs won the trade 6 YEARS AGO, I'm happy they got rid of him, his lousy attitude and shitty work ethic they now have to concentrate on getting rid of phaneuf. Can't wait for to see your response to that.

I'm a life long Leaf hater. I am not liking what I hear and see from Brendan Shanahan. He actually seems to know what he is doing and has an actual plan.

I think Kessel is worth much more than what we got for him. But I'm going to give my trust in Shanny, Hunter and Babcock they are great hockey minds. I would have wanted 2 1st rounders at a minimum though.

It is hard to take anyone seriously who uses "your" in place of "you are" or "you're".

Kessel had a limited no trade clause. He put the cuffs on the Leafs so under the circumstances Pens were really the only trading partner. They got the best they could for him. The other alternative was to let him start the year and that was not an option Leafs were willing to take.

“The hot dog vendor who parks daily at Front and John Sts. just lost his most reliable customer, Almost every afternoon at 2:30 p.m., often wearing a toque, Phil Kessel would wander from his neighborhood condominium to consume his daily snack.”

If he performs during the first 3 years, Edmonton will give him an 8 year offer. It's highly unlikely that he will be offered a 4 year contract so that he can reach unrestricted free agency and leave with no compensation. Edmonton have the option of low balling him for 4 years and then trade him in the middle of the 4th year(his 7th in the league) if they suspect that he wants out. It's hard to reject long term security and risk getting hurt with a short term contract. Then again, if the Leafs really want him, they can offer him a 7 year 140 mil contract when he becomes a restricted free agent and lose 4 or 5 first rounders as compensation to Edmonton.

Now that school is out and I flunk superstar-88s grammar course lets get back to topic. I wonder how much of a change there will be in the attitude of Bozak and van Riemsdyk considering how much of a cancer Kessel was. I blame carlyle for kessels attitude when kessel didn't want to do a drill that coach Spot ask him to do and Carlyle said that he didn't have to do it then went and told the media that kessel was a special player and you treat them differently, can you imagine what Babcock would of done?

I hear that kessel is training with Gary Roberts, to bad he didn't do that a year ago!

Ready to be graded superstar (wow, what a arrogant handle :hippie:)

The most they can offer is a little more than 14m a year under the current cap (20%). They match no matter what. I am sure will try to buy a few of his UFA years with his second contract too. All I am saying is it's impossible to happen for at least 7 years, and then becomes very unlikely after that.

Let's come to grips with the fact that Kessel may go nuts next year ( highly motivated ) but it is a long contract and eventually he will revert to the old Phil Kessel ....

That's possible but I think, IMHO, that he won't because he is in a winning environment with winners and Crosby is no Phaneuf when is comes to leadership plus the fact that he won't have the buzzards hanging around pestering him every waking moment ( media), however, that being said lets see what happens when he starts to go into one of his famous prolonged funks and the fans start to turn on him.

Kessel is going to light the lamp this season, I think 40+ goals. But seasons 3 and 4 he'll slow down and the Pens will want to get rid of him, I see the Pens buying him out late in his contract. Also Kessel is streak scorer, he will get into slumps. Kessel won't be back checking. Kessel can prolong his career if he checks into Gary Roberts training.
