I used to llive in the area in the early 80's. Have lots of good memories about the store. Thanksgiving's FREE turkey is the highlight!
Don't think it would be a good idea to build another condo in that spot. How's about you? Any thoughts about the store during your younger years?

Not surprising. The land is worth lots of money and the Mirvishes have divested themselves of their restaurants and the Princess of Wales Theatre.

We need Jennifer to start a petition to "Save Honest Ed's". Instead of condos, what if they build a Wal-Mart on that site?

I can't blame the Mirvishes for cashing out.

The most appropriate use would be a condo with shops at ground level.

That is the trend.

Thankfully we didn't need to go to Honest Ed's for turkey (way back in the day, Italians didn't eat turkey as part of the festive dinner but now we include traditional Cdn fare as part of an Italian multi-course dinner on such occasions), but I do remember as a youngster taking the TTC with my mama and shopping at Honest Ed's. I remember she bought my brother and I blue jeans for a $1 a piece. Incredible. Those were my first blue jeans I think too.

I also recall a neighbour who worked at HE who drove a huge Lincoln with a slogan on the tail end of his trunk that said IT'S FUN TO SHOP AT HONEST ED'S (or words to that effect).

The really sad part is that not only is the store up for sale, so too is "Mirvish Village" all along Markham Street.

All those old cool Annex houses will get nuked for sure and replaced with another faceless box.

The other thing I don't understand is how come David Mirvish was talking about building his own condos down at King and John (nuking the Princess of Wales Theatre and that entire block in the process) and building some Frank Geary inspired condo in their place.

If was going to do that, how come he wouldn't do the same at Bloor and Bathurst?

I remember the great book store in the Annex but I haven't been down there to shop in a long time. Maybe it's become passé. The Hot Docs theatre is nearby and great.

Last time I went in there was many moons ago. I still remember the guy on the loudspeaker: "one dozen bagelsssss only .99 centssss." Mirvish is probably afraid if he waits too long the site will be designated a heritage site as so many people have strong feelings about the place.

I'm ashamed to say I have never been in Honest Ed's. I feel like I must visit now since it may not be there any longer. Don't want to miss out on Toronto's history.
Honest Ed's was a store in perhaps a by-gone era. When someone wanted deals and didn't mind cheap stuff. Also, there were very few shopping malls and the numerous big box retail outlets we have now. The only mall I recall was Yorkdale and perhaps Dufferin Mall. Also, I lived north of Dufferin and Bloor as a kid. So Honest Ed's was not far away by bus.

If there was an Honest Ed's in the suburbs, I might visit it more but it's out of the way now.

I still buy shit there on rare occasion but I won't miss it if it goes. It's really the last old style budget department store left in the GTA.

If the property is worth $100 million, I doubt if Walmart would be that interested.( thank God!)

You haven't missed anything.

In spite of its history, the store -- by today's standards -- is a dump.

I was there just after New Years Day and was disappointed. It is not at all like it used to be. Either I didn't look hard enough, or it has turned into a glorified junk store, sorry to say. Many years ago, there was a lot of good stuff there for sale, but not any more.
