This was the most interesting news lately from the PRC, that they were working on blowing air in front of the heat seeking sensor to make a hypersonic weapon shoot out like a air-to-air missile.

Why just one?

Was it supposed to be a warning or is Putin just running low on missiles?
Besides getting all sorts of data on the first use of the hypersonic missile used in combat, they wanted to get data, ie. America's ability to detect it in real time, from their foe.

America's ability to detect it in real time, from their foe.
Which they had no problems doing much in the same as they had no issues detecting China's hypersonic test flight. Interception time is the problem not detection.

It seems downright imbecilic to think that hypersonic missiles are somehow difficult to track just due to the speeds at which they travel. Any object traveling at multiples of the speed of sound and especially one at such a low altitude is going to create a tremendous amount of heat. since the atmosphere is denser closer to the ground far more ablative heating is going to be generated. Naturally this makes it quite visible to space based infrared detection systems that are already designed to detect and track the launch of high speed and thermally intense objects like intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The US has quite the extensive system for detection in place and is constantly modernizing and adding to it, some details of it are available here; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space-Based_Infrared_System

Was it supposed to be a warning or is Putin just running low on missiles?
The Russians sure love to brag about all their advanced weapon systems don't they? I don't doubt that they have some good tech, the problem seems to be they don't have much of it. They paraded around their next generation tank the T-14 Armata, 'the most advance tank in the world' according to them, back in 2015. The initial production run was suppose to be 2,300 units by 2020. They had to scale back that order by a little... their now expecting an impressive 70 to 100 units sometime this year, maybe.

Let's just get it over with, open a second front against Russia. Humanity has either one of two choices: Death by nuclear incineration or slow strangulation from climate change.

Or wait until the words of the Prophet Burton Cummings become reality: There's a new mother nature taking over, there's a new splendid lady come to call. There's a new mother nature taking over, she's getting us all...she's getting us all.

How The U.S. Fell Behind In Hypersonic Technology

Dec 29, 2021

There is a much simpler, and cliché answer.

“United we stood, and divided we fell”

The US has been at war with itself for at least 2 decades. It’s really the rich vs the poor, but the avg rube believes it’s right vs left. That’s why the rubes will never win…. No matter how many tiki torches or AR-15’s they bring to the fight.

But America became distracted by itself. They are literally fighting with each other to keep democracy alive, all while dictators on the other side of the world are laser focused on defeating us. They are winning, while I am not sure we entirely understand we’re in a fight. A very large portion of our own population does not trust our news, and will eagerly tell you Russia is not engaged in a war in Ukraine.

They cost 100 million $$$$ each. That means Russia can probably afford to own 3.
Also means they are running out of other missiles.
Apparently this missile actually hit a farm in the east area of Ukraine, not what Russia claimed.
What a surprise.

I don't think that's true.
Even on this board nobody would claim that.

They are killing chickens so when they add them up in the fall, Ukraine will have less.

Turns out most of the doom and gloom about the US falling behind in this tech was largely just sensationalism. When it comes to true hypersonic technology(scramjets) and not just regular ballistic missiles flying in the atmosphere masquerading as hypersonics just so you can call them that,

the US is actually ahead;

Kind of like the "missile gap" back in the day. Turned out that not only America had the numbers on their side, but also the quality.

Just to be correct,
2300 were ordered in 2010.
20 were delivered for testing in 2015.
2 broke down during a May day parade.
These were used for a static display at the RAE 2015 russian army arms expo in September 2015.
In July 2018, the deputy prime minister of defense Yury Borisov, said there is currently no need to mass-produce the Armata when its older predecessors, namely the latest variants of the T-72, remain "effective against American, German and French counterparts", saying, "Why flood our military with Armatas, the T-72s are in great demand on the market.
The order was reduced from 2300 to 32 to be delivered at the end of 2021, this was delayed due to financial abuses and electronic supply shortages.
In November 2021, state trials were supposed to be in progress and expected to be completed in 2022, but another "pilot batch" of twenty tanks was yet to be delivered to the armed forces.
Production of the pilot batch of twenty tanks was expected to start in 2023, if ever.
So the T-72 , first built in 1968, is the most advanced tank they have ready for battle.
2,000 are said to be available for use.
Actually less then that with the losses in Ukraine, around 355 T-72 confirmed destroyed.
It does have some systems upgrades, but none new since 2000, when they added night vision.
As for planes, the most advanced Russian fighter jet, the SU-57, there are only 3 in service, with 78 still on order.
First delivered in Jan 2020 with projected deliveries of 15 per year, shows they are behind on production before the sanctions.
