I'd like to know who came up with the word John, it is a mans name and is used to describe men who pick women up and also is used to describe a toilet.
Sheesh girl, you've got WAY too much time on yer hands lol
John is a very common/neutral name for men, aka the dear john letters guys get when they are in the military etc. BTW: the term "john" doesn't apply to a man who picks up women, it applies to a man who frequents prostitutes, a guy who picks up women is called a player or the more modern ghetto version: playa.....
I think the term john aka toilet comes from Johnny on the Spot but there is probably some historical reference to the name.
As for the term hobbying, I think it is a good slang term as well as being vague enough that you can discuss or mention it in public without getting any odd looks.
As for audio being an expensive hobby, yeah, older tube amps rock. I heard a 1970 marantz tube amp and it was so freakin clean, and warm (something missing from today's ROTM amps). I was once the proud owner of a rega planar 2 turntable and it was amazing.
I've been out of the hobby for a while now, are ribbon speakers still hot in the audiofile realm? I heard a pair a long time ago at bay bloor and they were sweet.....
