I wouldn't be surprised if your nod to Terry Fox turns out to be the choice they pick, Annessa. Funnily enough, I just had this conversation with a friend of mine yesterday. When the commercial for the show was on, he figured the winner would turn out to be somebody frivolous like a hockey player. I didn't agree, as I told him Canadians (and especially CBC viewers) are likely to put more thoughtful consideration into it. I responded with my best guess of it being either a leader who defined Canada for a generation like Pierre Trudeau, or more likely, somebody who touched us all and brought us together as a nation, namely, Terry Fox. Needless to say, I applaud and agree completely with your choice Annessa!

I never thought much of this Terry Fox fella or any of these do something across something types but then I drove to Thunder Bay one year thats right drove my van to ThunderBay and that almost killed me. I saw the spot where he had to stop and I was amazed humbled that someone with one leg ran or hoped what ever you want to call it made it from Newfoundland to almost ThunderBay and I could almost not drive from Toronto to ThunderBay in a car ....... dam he was something special if that is not a hero, what is he??.........

A True Inspiration

Buy the book and read his story, I promise you it will be one of if not the best book you'll ever read in your life. I just finished reading it a few days ago and his story has filled me with more inspiration then I thought was possible. I finished the book in 2 days because I just couldn't put it down. It brought me smiles, it brought me shock, it brought me tears but overall it gave me the honor of knowing such a man exsisted and he is Canadian.

It's called TERRY FOX ~ His Story - By: Leslie Scrivener

From the Inside Flap

Terry Fox, the one-legged runner from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, made an indelible impression upon people across Canada and around the world. An outstanding athlete with a stubborn and competitive spirit, he lost his leg to cancer at 19, but said “nobody is ever going to call me a quitter.

On April 12, 1980, Terry Fox set out from St. John’s, Newfoundland to begin the run across Canada that he named the Marathon of Hope. His ambition was to raise a million dollars for cancer research. It wasn’t easy. Initial support from communities varied from terrific to nothing at all. His prosthetic leg was painful to run on, and there were always traffic and extreme weather conditions to deal with. But, by the time he reached Ontario – a journey of more than 3,000 kilometres – word of his achievement had spread, and thousands cheered him and followed his progress. Terry’s spirits soared, and now he hoped to raise $22 million dollars – one dollar for every Canadian. He succeeded in this ambition, but the Marathon of Hope ended near Thunder Bay, Ontario on September 1, 1980. The cancer had spread to his lungs, and, after running 24 miles in one day, on the next he could run no further.

When cancer finally claimed his life in 1981, Canada mourned the loss of a hero, but the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope lives on. The Terry Fox Foundation raised more than $17 million in 1999, and support for the event nationally and around the world is growing.

On the back of the book there is a beautiful picture of him and a boy that also lost his leg playing around in a pond and his personal quote: (there are many in this book)

"I just wish people would realize that anything is possible if you try... dreams are made if people try"

If You Don't Mind Please....

I was wondering and would like to know as 'The Greatest Canadian' is coming up in the next few weeks/months... Who is going to register to vote? I should have done a poll but I didn't think of it at the time. I was thinking of Goober again.

So all those that are going to register and vote post a Yea at the beginning of your post and those who are not post a Nay (I promise I won't pounce on anyone that posts Nay) :)

It's a tough one. Many truly great Canadians don't come from the high profile world of sports and entertainment, or have left the country to get the jobs and recognition. A few of my picks are:

Drs Banting and Best
AG Bell
David Suzuki
Nellie Mclung, Laura Secord
Moshe Safdie
General Isaac Brock (hey, he defeated the American invasion of Canada)
