It started with Oz.

But the genre really took flight with The Sopranos, quickly followed by The Wire then Breaking Bad. Currently the tradition of excellence is being upheld by Justified and Peaky Blinders. All five of these series have a +8.5 rating on IMBD. But has the genre peaked?

Quality over quantity. Peaky Blinders has only 12 episodes over two Seasons, but each episode could easily be expanded into a feature film. It's that good.

It has been renewed for a third Season:

Naw it has always been there and will always be there.

Cops, gangsters, private eyes, lawyers are staples.

But i think writing has improved for tv shows as more switch towards long story arcs.

I agree. The writing, acting and production quality is fantastic.

If you include other genres like Mad Men, the Tunnel, etc it truly is a golden age.

Then at the opposite end of the spectrum you get the Kardashians and 'Dating Naked' (is that a real show?) Honey Boo Boo and the rest of that 'stuff'.

Oh well, something for everyone!

Dating Naked? Naked and Afraid is the best reality show since Iron Chef: Japan. Talk about extreme survival and getting down to the bare essentials!
