I hate it when people use incorrect English to write stupid trick questions.

Cardinal, thanks for your perspective/perception, however, to properly phrase the question and get your interpretation, the sentence should read as below.

---> Angry and hungry are two words that end in '-gry'. There are three words in "the English language." What is the third word.

ONLY when the sentence is phrased with "the English language" in parenthesis is the interpretation that the "correct" answer "language."

There is a popular scan on the streets of New Orleans that uses a similar misuse of English to extort money. Someone will walk up to you and say, "I'll bet you $5 that I can tell you where you got those shoes." Should you take the wager, the person will tell you that "You got them on your feet." and expect you to fork over $5. (Just for those of you not too keen on English, I don't "got" them on my feet, I "have" them on my feet. I "got" them out of my closet this morning.")

Sorry, just one picky English-speaking person trying to speak the King's English :)

Judging by your previous postings, I'm not sure if you are joking here or not.

Interesting. My friend had that exact scam done to him in New Orleans but it cost him $15. Funny. I diddn't know it was so popular.

Here and there
A scam also depicted in the novel "Hotel" by Arthur Hailey about four some-odd decades ago. Oddly enough, that book was also based in New Orleans...

Sorry Keyser but I take no responsibilty for what I wrote because I didn't wright it! I too agree with you about the riddle, it is stupid. But my explanation was cut from the link Papasmerf supplied. It was written by someone else.

If you review my post you will note at the end that I place a disclaimer between the astericks idenifying the source as Papasmerfs link and not me.

Can you fault me for faulty cutting and pasting. Absolutely! I will never understand how Goober does this so well. I'm still sitting around here with siccors and glue in my hands!

Cardinal, sorry the way I phrased my comment. I realize that you were responding to another post, and didn't mean to imply that you were asking a stupid question.

Cinema Face, I haven't been to NOLA for about a year; inflation must have driven up the price :)

Incorrect use of parenthesis

Keyser Soze said:
"the English language" in parenthesis ......
Hate to do this to you Keyser, but I'm another "picky" person and do my utmost to correctly use the Queen's English as opposed to the King's English. Therefore, I feel duty bound to inform you that the word parenthesis implies the usuage of round brackets and not, as in this case, quotation marks.

Before posting this reply, I checked with the Oxford English Dictionary which defines parenthesis as:

1. an additional word, phrase, or sentence inserted in a pasage which is grammatically complete without it, and usually marked off by brackets, dashes, or commas. 2. either of the pair of round brackets (like these) used for this.
in parenthesis between brackets as a parenthesis; as an aside or digression in a speech etc.
