A woman shopping at Walmart today at Eglinton and Warden and buys many items including large packages of tissues, toilet paper, detergents, etc. Goes to check out finding that only 3 checkouts are open with large lineups waiting and was told to go to the self service checkouts which she did but had a very difficult time scanning these large items and she complained to the manager who said, sorry. This billion dollar company trying to cut down on their employee expenses and reducing their own costs while not giving a damn for their customer service and yet raising the cost of goods using covid as their excuse is laughing all the way to the bank. So, question, Is The Customer Right???

Oh yawn. Big bad Walmart. Again.

You guys are going on about the company that you hate and not the situation itself so therefore showing your bias in this but since it will be unpopular and we need both sides for a debate, I will take the opposite side.

She should have said no thanks or ask one of the many employees working the self check-out section for help.

I see at least 3-4 people in the self check-out sections.

If they put those employees in front of single cash registers, people would complain more about the lines then they already do.

Some customers need to learn to ask for help. Some need to learn to stand their ground. She could have done both.

No? What was the nature of her complaint to the manager? Any Walmart I've been to has scanner guns at each self-checkout station for bulky items. Is this an article, or do you personally know the woman?

As for "raising the cost of goods using COVID as their excuse".....are you really that clueless about the situation? Costs ARE going up; on some items, skyrocketing. Are you saying Walmart should just eat that? They're a business, and exist to earn their shareholders money. Expecting Walmart to voluntarily cut their profit because COVID is like asking someone on the sunshine list to voluntarily take a pay decrease because our government is so in debt.

Meaningful change has to come from without, not within. Technology, like self-checkout stations, is going to happen. We have to determine as a society how to handle both that and globalization. Right now, we're doing a piss poor job because no one has the political will to address it. I have my own theories on how to go about addressing it, but that's not the topic of this thread.

I go to Walmart a lot since there are a couple of stores close to me. I go there for specific things as I find items expensive unless they are on sale. The store associates are always nice and willing to help. Scanning large/bulky/heavy items could be difficult for some especially if you didn’t pack your cart thinking you would have to scan items yourself, even using the portable scanner.

In regards to being informed that I could use the self checkout as opposed to the cashier line, yes “informed” not told, it is nice being provided a choice but if I need to be in the cashier line I let them know, end of storey. They don’t “force” me to go to the self checkout.

In my opinion I really like SDM especially being a Optimum member. Bonus points days are amazing on the weekend. I buy all many things there on sale and with a 20,000 bonus points with $60 purchase, the real cost of the product is 33% lower but just on a pay now benefit later program. Prices are much cheaper than at Walmart for many things. Plus redeeming your bonus points on their special redemption days is amazing. My biggest complaint is, their shopping carts are too small or poorly designed but I can understand that since stores are much smaller than other stores like Walmart

I don’t like Walmart but that’s neither here nor there.

As far as the woman’s complaint to the manager goes, I’m not quite clear what she’s complaining about.

Was she upset that the associate suggest she go to the self-check out? Did she feel bullied into using a service she was uncomfortable with? Was she upset no staff were available to help her?

I dunno…if I was the manager I’d listen to the woman and try to get the problem sorted out (unless she was being rude or refusing to wear a mask or some other bs in which case she can gtfo and not come back).

Firstly, the specific problem she had was handling large items at a self checkout being that she is a senior. Secondly companies such as Walmart, Loblaws, Metro, etc. are experiencing the largest profits ever and that includes banks and other financial institutions. The general public, particularly seniors on fixed incomes are having a more difficult time to make ends meet. Remember OAS pensions are not increasing to cover increases in the cost of many grocery items, particularly meat items. Whatever the reason for price increases, the bottom line is these stores are so lacking in customer service. Have you ever had to return an item at Walmart? Give yourself up to an hour to get served. Yes, new technology is changing the way businesses are run, but many of them have the attitude that customer service doesn't mean a damn thing.

She would have had to place the large item in the cart, place the large item on the belt, put the large item back into the cart after paying , wheel the item out of the store and to her car, take the items from the cart and put into her car, return the cart, unload her car when she arrived home and carried the items to where she stored them. And she cannot figure out how to scan the items at the self serve?

So, her specific issue is that she's too old? Yeah, that sounds like Walmart's problem.

Anyone who goes to Walmart for "customer service" is likely not the sharpest knife in the drawer to begin with.

And [gasp]....how dare businesses try to make money? I'm no fan of Walmart's employment practices, but anyone who thinks "the customer is always right" has never worked a shitty retail/restaurant/customer service job.

Your main issue is with the company and their business success or overall operation.

That has nothing to do with the individual customer. You realize that right?

This is about one old lady and if she was right in something. I don’t know yet what that is but that is the question at hand.

Anyone saying the lady is “right” all have issues with Walmart as a whole and therefore showing their bias as you are here.

You think retailers are bad, think about how banks do business. Two choices, routinely get shit on or keep your money under the mattress...

I got yelled at and thrown out of the manager's office because I complained how the investment manager had fucked up my account. TD bank on customer appreciation day. Green balloons everywhere.

In terms profit, I believe their best quarter ever was at the tail end of last year. But that makes sense, as their revenue is also at records. But it hides the fact that their net profit margin is actually on the low side, and has been since 2016. The reason their profits are large, in terms of sheer size, is because of their scale, not because they are gouging.

Seniors, and the general public, are having a more difficult time making ends meet, because we have foundational economic issues, not because of the big, bad companies.

Yes, I have returned things to Walmart, without issue, and expediently, but that'll depend on location. Walmart has very good customer service policies, but they don't mean much if the employees don't follow them. Not sure what industry you're in, or what you do within that industry, but if you have had to organize hiring in the last year or so, you'd realize the unemployed labor pool available is crap. You can hold Walmart accountable for their shitty employees if you want, but they're dealing with what they can get.

If they can staff the selfies with helpers they can open more cashier lanes IMO Looks like Shopers are going the same way now. Selfie unless you are buying lottery tickets or paying cash NO debit/credit cards.
