‘The CPP is not meant to be the only retirement plan. SO FAR the assumption is that people have agency and decide to save for retirement. However, given the savings rate decline over the last decades, I suspect people are going to get out of their retirement exactly what they put in.

Yeah. This is silly. The funds raised by the CPP do not go into the government coffers. They are outside the reach of Trudeau or PP or any PM. The CPP is NOT meant to replace any retirement savings you might have. They are to supplement it. We all need to save with RRSPs or TFSAs, even for those of us who have a DB pension or some other type of pension.

There has been some talk from some academics that the CPP contribution should be raised so that it could be a standalone DB-style pension for everyone. Not sure if there is an appetite for that, and I'm sure we'd see some pushback from the likes of OMERS, BCI, AIMCo, OTPP and the CPDQ...
